However, as in all manufacturing processes, it has its limitations and specificities. Equipping engineers with this knowledge allows for a higher degree of optimization, extracting the most out of this technology. Therefore, a specific part design was devised and created via L-PBF (Laser Powder Bed Fusion) using AlSi10Mg powder. Certain parameters were varied to identify the influence on material density, hardness, roughness, residual stress and microstructures. It was found that on heat treated parts laser pattern strategy is one of the most influential aspects, showing that chessboard and stripes 67° improved outcome; average Ra roughness varied between 8–12 µm, residual stress was higher on vertical surfaces than horizontal surfaces, with the combination of support structures and stripes 67° strategies generating the lowest residual stress (205 MPa on a l...

To better estimate the cost for a product, data must be available from both engineering systems and business systems. This paper presents a cost estimation system being developed to support design time cost estimation using the Federated Intelligent Product EnviRonment (FIPER), which is being developed as part of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Advanced Technology Program (ATP). The FIPER research team is developing an architecture that interconnects design and analysis software tools in a peer level architecture to support multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO), design for six sigma (DFSS) and robust design.

The algorithm performs space search with two simultaneous decisions: selection of process plan for parts between several alternatives, and assignment of parts and required machines to manufacturing cells. Several criteria for decision-making may be introduced into this procedure: intercellular traffic, size of the machine cells, ratio of state space expansion, and so on. The effect of this simultaneous decision-making on the computation resources (memory and time) necessary to perform the space search has been studied in this paper. The algorithm based on classification of machines and application of space search to recursively assign sorted machines, and parts to cells, has been studied with several decision making criteria. Performance of the algorithm is evaluated with respect to the quality of the obtained solution (as compared with different algorithms on the same problem) and with recording of the necessary memory and time to generate the solution. The conclusions from this experiment are presented and suggestions on suitability of criteria provided.
