This article is based on the author's experience teaching American literature in Romania on a U.S... more This article is based on the author's experience teaching American literature in Romania on a U.S. Fulbright Grant. This experience allowed the author to rethink his view of American literature in general, and his teaching of Ralph Waldo Emerson in particular. Emerson's work was embraced by the students, although not due to any specific pro-American sentiment. Instead, the students appeared to find in it an articulation of self-definition that reflects the current movement of the country from its post-Communist past into its burgeoning capitalist present.
