Biography
Brendon Rodney is a three-time Olympic medallist in the 4x100m relay, regularly running the third leg.
In his third Olympic appearance, Rodney won gold alongside Aaron Brown, Jerome Blake, and Andre De Grasse at Paris 2024. Their time of 37.50 was just 0.02 slower than the national record they had set in becoming world champions in 2022. They had qualified Canada in the 4x100m relay for Paris 2024 by winning their heat at the World Athletics Relays in the Bahamas in May 2024 where they went on to win silver behind the United States in the final. At Paris 2024, Rodney also posted his best individual Olympic result, placing 16th in the 200m after advancing to the semifinals.
In his Olympic debut at Rio 2016, Rodney helped the 4x100m relay break a 20-year-old national record to win bronze. He also competed in the 200m after winning the event at the 2016 Canadian Championships where he set a personal best time of 19.96 seconds, becoming just the second Canadian to run sub-20 seconds.
At Tokyo 2020, he again ran the third leg of the 4x100m relay in both the first round and final to earn silver for a second straight Olympic medal in the event. He also raced individually in the 200m.
Rodney stood atop the podium at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon after winning gold in the 4x100m relay with teammates Brown, Blake, and De Grasse. They also broke the national record with their time of 37.48.
Rodney won his first national 200m title in 2014, when he also made his senior international debut with Canada at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
In 2015, Rodney won silver in the 200m at the Canadian Championships before going on to compete at the Pan Am Games in Toronto where he missed advancing to the 200m final by one spot. He was also a member of the 4x100m relay team that appeared to have won Pan Am gold, only to be disqualified for a lane violation. Rodney made his World Athletics Championships debut in 2015, running the third leg as Canada won bronze in the 4x100m relay. He also ran a then-personal best 20.18 seconds while advancing to the semifinals in the 200m.
In 2017, Rodney was the national silver medallist in both the 100m and 200m and returned to the World Athletics Championships. He ran in both the 100m and 4x100m relay, finishing sixth in the latter. Earlier in the season he won gold with the 4x200m relay team at the World Relays in Nassau.
In 2019, Rodney finished second in the 200m at the Canadian Championships and was named to the team for the Pan American Games and the World Athletics Championships, reaching the 200m semifinals at the latter.
In 2014, Rodney set a school record at LIU in both the indoor and outdoor 200m and won the NEC titles for the second year in a row while also taking the conference titles in the 60m indoor, 100m, and 4x100m relay. As a junior in 2015, he reached the NCAA semifinals in the 200m, 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay. As a senior, he finished third in the 200m in at the indoor NCAA Championships.
