It operates from three hubs across England, the East Midlands, London and Sheffield, and is part of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Research Centre for the Prevention of Injury and Protection of Athlete Health, a worldwide network.

The NCSEM collaborates with universities, healthcare trusts, local authorities and private- and voluntary-sector organisations to improve Britons’ health through advanced sports science. Its projects are categorised under five themes, each relating to a different aspect of the value of physical activity: physical activity in disease prevention, exercise in chronic disease, sports injuries and musculoskeletal health, mental health and well-being, and performance health.
