Seventy patients (mean age 35) were enrolled in this study. While 10% of the patients have no complaint, chronic flow in 9%of the patients, recurrent vulvovaginal candidosis in 45% of the patients and acute infection in 36% of the patients were found. Samples collected with swab were incubated in SDA at 37°C for 24-48 hours. Yeast colonisations were identified by ID32 C kit and confirmed by a PCR assay using primers sets specific to Candida albicans. Yeast colonisations were observed in 31.4% of 70 patients. Identification of yeast colonisation by ID32 C kit showed C.albicans in 2...

To date, there have been only a few reports on children with chest wall involvement due to actinomycosis. Here we report a 9-year-old girl with a mass lesion in the chest wall mimicking Ewing's sarcoma of the rib. Thoracic actinomycosis without typical features of the disease is often evaluated with the suspicion of neoplasia. This rare entity should be considered in the differential diagnosis of mass lesions of the chest wall in children. The disease responds well to penicillin treatment.

She had been receiving only leflunomide (20 mg/day) for 5 months. On admission, there was no evidence of active arthritis or vasculitic lesion. Laboratory evaluation showed an erythrocyte sedimentation rate of 145 mm/h and C-reactive protein of 160 mg/dl. All cultures were negative. Chest radiograph and computed tomography (CT) revealed a pulmonary abscess. Staphylococcus aureus multiplied in the culture of a purulent sample obtained from the abscess under ultrasonography. The leflunomide was stopped, and sultamicillin (IV 4x2 g/day) was started for a further 6 weeks. Four weeks later, the patient had completely recovered and CT showed significant improvement of the pulmonary abscess. Ten milligrams/day of prednisolone and 7.5 mg/week of methotrexate were started for RA treatment. The patient has been under control for 5 months without any further abscess or RA activation.

All patients with rheumatoid arthritis attending a general hospital during a six-year period underwent clinical, radiological, and functional pulmonary evaluation and serological investigation. Twenty-five had an open lung biopsy for microscopic examination and immunofluorescence. The histopathological findings in this group were correlated with the clinical, radiological, functional, and serological altercations and with the clinical course of the rheumatoid process as well. Pulmonary affection in this series was a common finding, showing definite histopathological patterns and particular clinical features.
