Celia Pacquola – Delayed (Comedy) ****

On this the final day of the Fringe and having completed my reviewing schedule a few days ago, on something of a whim, I shed my reviewer’s lanyard and bought a bundle of tickets, some from the Half Price Hut.

I began at the Pleasance Courtyard with Gael Le Cornec’s portrayal of artist and model Camille Claudel – a beautiful and moving performance capturing the mood of the Parisian art world during the final years of the 19th century.

Then, it was off to the Gilded Balloon for the remainder of the day. Rob Crouch as Oliver Reed is spot on as the hard drinking, charismatic actor. The next two shows have been fully reviewed elsewhere on this site. Bad Musical is a delightfully silly and very funny send up of Musicals. Finally, Celia Pacquola is a comedienne whom I have seen before and I thoroughly enjoy her style of warm ‘feel good’, conversational humour.

Four contrasting shows to round off a most enjoyable Fringe.

Celia Pacquola – Flying Solo

****

4Stars

The name Celia Pacquola first came to my attention last Fringe and I was hearing good things about this new kid on the block from Australia, so made a point of checking for myself when I saw she was returning to Edinburgh for Fringe 2010.

Playing to a sold out room this bubbly comedian hit the stage running with a warm up gag or two with the front row prior to moving into her set, based on the trials, tribulations and even embarrassment of doing things solo. Of course she gives a few demonstrations and confessions about things that have happened to her and even an obsession with a particular game found on Facebook.

There is a whole raft of material from her earlier life both at home, school and the teenage years where examples of solos are expounded, all to great effect and merriment.

Ms Pacquola intersperses her sections with some VT of how she progressed with a challenge she set herself, a challenge she performs live at the conclusion of her set.

Celia was dubbed Adam Hills with ovaries last year and I can understand why. Like her countryman, she is engaging, very funny and seems a nice person with a huge stage presence. I look forward to seeing her develop into the household name he is.
