ABSTRACT
The persistent violence currently pervading the Northern part of Nigeria as again brought into fore the common social stigma always attached to Islam as a religion that promote violence and intolerance. To every Nigerian of different religious persuasion are of the obvious view that Islam is a religion is violent prone and also represent anything evil: no thanks to Boko Haram phenomenon and other earlier and later acclaimed religious fundamental groups- all of whom through their orgies of violence have unleashed mayhem on innocent Nigerians. The focus of this paper is to lay bare the Islamic perception on peace and peaceful-coexistence and to argue that the unholy act perpetrated by these groups are against the cardinal philosophical- ‘live and let others live’ in Islam.

The focus of this work was particularly made on three clerics namely: Bisiriyu Apalara (d. 1953), Şafwan Bello Akodo (d. 2003) and Abdul-Lateef Adebowale (d. 1998). While the first two clerics were assassinated by the Awo-Opa (Iji-Nla) Confraternity, Adebowale died as a result of the injury sustained from generator fuel explosion.
A survey research method was adopted. 500 members of the Muslim Community in Lagos State were randomly selected from the five geo-political zones comprising Ikeja, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos Island and Epe and 100 copies of the questionnaire were distributed among members in each zone. A total number of 450 copies of the questionnaire were retrieved and considered as whole. Moreover, structured interview method was used to seek the opinion of the Muslim clerics on the same issue. On this, two clerics were randomly selected in each zone. Da‘wah gatherings, Asalatu gatherings, Jumat services, and Youth fora were the areas where the selections were made. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics of means, standard deviation, simple percentage and frequency count.
Findings indicated that the deaths of the two clerics, Adebowale and Akodo, have serious effects on da‘wah activities in Lagos State. On the death of Adebowale for example, majority of Muslims in Lagos due to their little or no knowledge about other forms of martyrdom in Islam could not link death by fire disaster to martyrdom. As for Apalara, the time lag between the period of his death and now has made any reference to his martyrdom pale into insignificance. In the case of Akodo, the circumstances that led to his death had scared or discouraged some young Du’āt and made them fell unsecured while carrying out their da‘wah activities and this has had negative effects on da‘wah activities in Lagos State.
Study concluded that: Du’āt in Lagos State should form a body whose functions would be mainly based on regulating the conduct of their members in public da‘wah. Also du’āt in Lagos State should also understand the multi-religious nature of the State and the need to respect the views of people of other faiths. Moreso, there is the need for the establishment of a da‘wah institute by concerned stakeholders in Islam, particularly, those who have obtained both Western and Islamic Education, especially at the tertiary level. Moreover, the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) should be restructured and its presence made visible at the grassroot. Government must also be alive to its responsibility by improving on the security of lives and property and by addressing the security challenges of any place or event before it escalates into violence. Lastly, there should be seminars, workshops and refresher courses for religious leaders, as this will help the parties involved to learn more about their areas of divergence.

ABSTRACT
The spate of inter-religious violence in Nigeria is not a new phenomenon. However, the dimension and magnitude of this violence vary from one region to another. Among the Yoruba adherents of different religious faiths, one has witnessed a pocket of violence which led to a tentative conclusion that the area is partially violent proof. Taking the nature of man as a rational being, this assertion may not last long. While it is true that to some extent some Yoruba cultural factors have role to play in this regard, incessant violence from other parts of the country may lead to infiltration of conflict into Yorubaland. The aim of this of this paper therefore, is to explain the factors that enhanced peaceful-coexistence among Yoruba of different faiths and to suggest veritable panacea that will further sustain the mutual understanding among the adherent of different faiths in Yorubaland as well as to guide against future escalation of conflict between them.
