GENDER AND DOMESTIC LIFE: CHANGING PRACTICES IN FAMILIES AND HOUSEHOLDS Tony Chapman Houndmills: ... more GENDER AND DOMESTIC LIFE: CHANGING PRACTICES IN FAMILIES AND HOUSEHOLDS Tony Chapman Houndmills: Palgrave Macmillan, 2004, 249 pp. (paperback). Gender and Domestic Life begins from the premise that change and diversity are defining features of contemporary relationships. As such, the old accounts no longer fit people's experiences of domestic life. This book is offered as a corrective to the dominant, feminist approaches that have failed to acknowledge significant changes. Tony Chapman aims to present a more relevant perspective, one that is neither static nor pessimistic, that addresses multiple household structures, sees the home as more than a site of exploitation, and takes men's roles seriously. In doing so, Chapman provides a potted history of domestic life in various historical and cultural contexts and at different stages of the life course. A list of chapters provides some indication of the breadth of this book. Chapters 1 and 2 set up Chapman's premises and approach; Chapter 3 describes the beginnings of the separation of domestic and public spheres; Chapters 4 through 6 are built on accounts of breadwinners, homemakers and contemporary household practices and negotiations. The later chapters then present information on 'alternative' household structures: communes, migrants, gay and lesbian relationships, single people, and those who have retired. Finally, the conclusion reiterates Chapman's expectations for change. The diversity of topics makes for some fascinating reading. The historical studies serve a dual purpose of tracing the origins of contemporary practices and ideologies and opening a window onto the exotic behaviours of the past. Chapman is also generous with his inclusion of contemporary ethnographic data (he presents no new research). The extended quotes, while familiar from previous studies, remain an interesting way of exemplifying a point. And so at one level, the book is a good read. However, although enjoyable, Gender and Domestic Life is flawed. Some of the problems arise from its ambitious scope. Chapman jumps from one topic to another as he spans historical periods, cultural contexts, household types and a variety of domestic and paid-work practices. As a result, the aim of moving beyond the traditional focus on heterosexual cohabitation is only partially fulfilled: gay and lesbian households are allocated half a chapter, sharing the space with migrant families; a discussion on single people covers the social position of, and job opportunities for, Victorian spinsters, contemporary media representations of 'singletons' of the Bridget Jones variety, and the emotions of divorced and separated men and women. …

This BFI report highlights how class, ethnicity and education influence the way British viewers r... more This BFI report highlights how class, ethnicity and education influence the way British viewers relate to film and television and how these differences can exclude large groups of the population. It suggests we need to rethink how we communicate across our different communities as audiences are divided in their taste and understanding of British cultural programming and film. The study was carried out by the Open University and the University of Manchester for the BFI and it says culture has always divided people as much as it has provided a basis for shared values - and film and television are no exception. The problem is not one of minority groups failing to integrate with the national culture, rather key aspects of national film and television culture offer little space for ethnic interests or identities.

It examines a research project using two different approaches – a ‘virtual’ and a ‘classic’ ethnography – to argue that issues concerned with re-use of data depend on the methods employed and the overall processes of investigation. The paper argues for an appreciation of the contexts involved in the generation of research material which takes into account both the development of the study and related fieldwork processes as well as the academic context in which knowledge is produced, particularly those involved in the construction of academic selves and professional careers, which are part of a wider situation bearing upon scientific enquiry.

Relations of gender, class and race are considered in the deployment of maids for housework, the patterns of consumption of household technologies and the moral reasoning of daily living with hierarchical divisions within the home. The paper considers some parallels between the Brazilian context and that of more developed countries and also the specificity of Brazil. Based on participant observation, secondary data and an ethnographic study, rich empirical data is weaved through to discuss material and moral dimensions of domestic labour and care. How does the availability of cheap domestic labour configure relations of inequality? How are social differences in the home lived with and justified? The exploration of the Brazilian case illuminates some of the problems, contradictions and possible consequences of wealthier house...

It explores the relationship between housing and the position of individuals in social space mapped out by means of a multiple correspondence analysis. It considers the material aspects of housing and the changing contexts that are linked to the creation and display of desire for social position and distinction expressed in talk about home decoration as personal expression and individuals' ideas of a `dream house'. It is based on an empirical investigation of taste and lifestyle using nationally representative survey data and qualitative interviews. The article shows both that personal resources and the imagination of home are linked to levels of cultural capital, and that rich methods of investigation are required to grasp the significance of these normally invisible assets to broaden the academic understanding of the field of housing in contempo...
