Summary in the original language of the document

This CORE Organic Practice Abstract provides practical recommendations for preserving and increasing below-ground biodiversity through strip cropping systems. Compared to monocropping, strip cropping modifies the soil microbial C/N/P rations, favours fungi-dominated communities and promotes plant mycorrhizal symbiosis, guaranteeing comparable to higher crop yields.

EPrint Type: Practice tool
Teaser: Promote agrobiodiversity above and below ground with strip cropping!
What problem does the tool address?: The EU demand for organic vegetables is rapidly rising. Optimised agricultural practices aim not only to increase crop yield, but also to preserve diversity of the belowground organism groups. This is important for soil fertility.
What solution does the tool offer?: Instead of monocropping (one crop in a field), strip-cropping and intercropping are agricultural systems where two crops are simultaneously grown in the field, thus promoting agrobiodiversity.
