Summary
The Soil Navigator helps to find the answer to the question: »How can I best manage my soil to fulfil most of the soil function expectations?« Farmers can also submit their ambition levels regarding the five functions and baseline soil and management information for a given field. Together this enables the Navigator to give advice on issues such as field margin management, nutrient management, fertilisation and agricultural lime supplementation.

| What problem does the tool address?: | Soil health in Europe is severely degraded on more than two-thirds of the land area. This widespread degradation threatens the ability of soils to support food production and provide important regulating and supporting ecosystem services. Agriculture and other soil-dependent sectors are therefore under increasing pressure to adopt more sustainable soil management practices, which requires extensive adaptation and innovation. |
| What solution does the tool offer?: | The Soil Navigator decision support system (DSS) was developed in the Horizon 2020 project LANDMARK. It assesses the initial capacities of five soil functions within a field, including primary productivity, nutrient cycling, water purification and regulation, carbon sequestration and climate regulation, as well as biodiversity and habitat provision. In addition, this evidence-based DSS offers targeted solutions and management recommendations to improve the supply of several soil functions simultaneously and assisting farmers and farm advisors to make the right decisions for long-term sustainability. |
