(Land: 28,300ha, Fresh Water Lake: 11,800ha) After this area was completely reclaimed in 2006, there has been high possibility of dust generation and dispersion to the neighboring area. The dust generated at the reclaimed land was composed mainly of minerals with high salinity, and it could make harmful effect on crop production as well on to human's health such as eye irritation and respiratory disease. Especially, when those aerosol particles are reached on the leaves of farm crops, the photosynthesis and respiration of the plants can be under restraint resulting in the decrease of agricultural productivity of the nearby farm areas. Furthermore, highly concentrated salty particles can directly damage the leaf cells. In this study, field ex...

The monitoring result on the fugitive and suspended dust was significantly affected by the farming activities(harvesting and land cultivation) and vehicles passing nearby the measuring points. The concentration of the fugitive dust generated from the reclaimed land was reduced remarkably by the effect of halophyte present on the ground and the tide embankment. Comparing the data collected in 2006 and 2007, the concentrations of TSP and PM10 decreased by 47.4% and 29.5%, respectively. After harvesting operations at paddy field, TSP increased by 22% while PM10 increased by 54%. The concentration of a Cl-which is a representative ion of sea-salt decreased to about 35% in 2007 compared with 2006. This represents that the inside area change and plant covering rate affected on the decrease of fugitive dust. The correlation analysis for the compounds of topsoil at each measuring point shows that near the coastline is more comparable. The canopy of halophyte in the source area also increased which reduced the fugitive dust remarkably. The dust distribution measured by dust spectrometer at the same point shows that most particles are 0.5 to 2um size but not greater than 5 .

In most countries, odor annoyance from livestock production is an increasing problem in community. In order to reduce the odor inconvenience and establish a good relation between livestock industries and the surrounding communities, many studies, such as diffusion simulations and field experiments, on the odor dispersion and its reduction have been investigated. These studies need to accompany the aerodynamic approach, as a main mechanism of diffusion phenomenon, and computational fluid dynamics(CFD) can be effectively used to study this kind of research. CFD considers both various wind conditions as well as topographical conditions to study aerodynamic phenomenon. Therefore the ultimate objective of the study was to develop an aerodynamic model to predict qualitatively and quantitatively odor diffusion from livestock. In this study, as the first step of this study, various phenomena and factors of odor diffusion from livestock ...

Development of new-source of energy which is renewable and carbon neutral is necessary for mankin... more Development of new-source of energy which is renewable and carbon neutral is necessary for mankind’s environmental and economic sustainability. Among the new sources of energy being explored, biodiesel derived from oil crops and from microalgae is the most potential and promising source. However, the production period of oil plants is also one of the primary concerns. More so, meeting the increasing demand of energy from oil plants would require the world to use virtually all of its arable land which also competes with the increasing demand of food supply. Microalgae which is the most potential source of biodiesel overcomes such drawbacks. Microalgae use primary sunlight and CO2 to produce oil. Oil content in microalgae can exceed 80% by weight of dry mass and they can double their biomass within 24 h. Although a number of photobioreactors (PBRs) have been proposed for large scale production of microalgae, only a few can be practically used because of the following factors: most des...

This paper discusses the quantitative effect of windbreaks on wind velocity in the reclaimed land... more This paper discusses the quantitative effect of windbreaks on wind velocity in the reclaimed land at Saemangeum in South Korea. The effectiveness of windbreaks to reduce the velocity to prevent the generation and diffusion of dust are very critical. Using CFD simulations, the effects of porosity, height, and distance between the adjacent fences as well as the effect of tree windbreaks were investigated. A wind tunnel test was conducted and data gathered were used to develop and validate the CFD models. From the experiments and CFD simulations, the overall percentage difference of the measured velocities was 7.20% which is acceptable to validate the CFD models. In the case of tree windbreak simulation, the methodologies to model the real effect of tree windbreak were conducted and compared such as the application of tree porosity, inertial resistance and input velocity. Results have shown that a windbreak fence with porosity of 0.2 and a height of 0.6 m and constructed in array at 6 ...

After the area was completely reclaimed in 2006, halophyte plants and several windbreak systems were installed. The distributions of suspended dust particle was regularly measured through field experiment. The size of dust source area was also analyzed periodically and then it was determined to be in the following order: Buan > Gimje > Gunsan. The suspended dust which were dispersed to the neighboring areas were significantly affected by the size of the soil particles, wind velocity and wind direction. The results of Big Spring Number Eight (BSNE) experiments also showed that the concentration of the fugitive dust generated from the reclaimed land was reduced remarkably by the presence of halophyte plants. Recently, in 2008, the measured dust concentration rate was decreased by an average of 30.6%. The average dust concentration is expected to decre...

To meet the country's demand, livestock houses become larger and wider with increased raising density. In larger livestock houses, pollutants such as flake of pig skin, excrement, odor, various dusts and noxious gas like ammonia are excessively accumulated inside the facility. These will cause weak immunity for the pigs, diminution of productivity and degeneration of working condition. These problems can be solved through the ventilation performance of the facility. In the winter time, ventilation must be controlled to minimum to maintain a suitable thermal condition. However, this affects the other internal environmental condition because of the minimum ventilation. The installation of "wet air cleaner" especially in the winter time can be an alternative solution. For efficient application of this machine, there is a need to understand the existing ventilation cond...

Among the many types of PBRs, the bubble column type is very attractive because of its simple construction and easy operation. However, despite the availability of these PBRs, only a few of them can be practically used for mass production. Many limitations still holdback their use especially during their scale-up. To enlarge the culture volume and productivity while supplying optimum environmental conditions, various PBR structures and process control are needed to be investigated. In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was economically used to design a bubble-column type PBR taking the place of field experiments. CFD is a promising technique which can simulate the growth and production of microalgae in the PBR. To study bubble column PBR with CFD, the most important factor is...

As an alternative to classical sensor-based control method, this paper introduces a model-based control method that consists of two models: the predictive model and the evaluation model. As a first step, this paper presents straightforward models to predict the effect of natural ventilation in a greenhouse according to meteorological factors, such as outdoor air temperature, soil temperature, solar radiation and mean wind speed, and structural factor, opening rate of roof ventilators. A multiple regression analysis was conducted to develop the predictive models on the basis of data obtained by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The output of the models are air temperature drops due to ventilation at 9 sub-volumes in the greenhouse and individual volumetric ventilation rate through 6 roof ventilators, and showed a good agreement with the CFD-computed results. The resulting predictive models have an advantage of ensuring quick and reasonable predictions and thereby can be used as a part of a real-time model-based control system for a naturally ventilated greenhouse to predict the implications of alternative control operation.

Saemangeum area, the experimental place of this study, is located at the western costal area, and its total area reach to 28,300ha. CFD model were developed to overcome the difficulties of field experiment depending on very limited measuring points as well as dealing with the spacious area. The 3-D CFD model is designed with dust generation computed by the local GIS data is used to design the topography of Saemangeum area. All the seasonally collected data were used as the CFD input data as well as to improve the accuracy of the developed CFD model. The experimental results indicated that dust generated at Saemangeum is diffused very extensively and strongly depended on weather condition. Moreover, the dust contain salty contents which can be very harmful to plant production while the dust itself causes respiratory and eye diseases for human and animals. Through this study, it is recognized that the aerodynamic simulation can be very effective tool to build the prediction and alarm system of dust diffusion.

Foot-and-mouth disease GIS OpenFOAM Livestock infectious diseases, such as foot-and-mouth disease... more Foot-and-mouth disease GIS OpenFOAM Livestock infectious diseases, such as foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), cause substantial economic damage to livestock farms and their related industries. Among various causes of disease spread, airborne dispersion has previously been considered to be an important factor that could not be controlled by preventive measures to stop the spread of disease that focus on direct and indirect contact. Forecasting and predicting airborne virus spread are important to make time for developing strategies and to minimise the damage of the disease. To predict the airborne spread of the disease a modelling approach is important since field experiments using sensors are ineffective because of the rarefied concentrations of virus in the air. The simulation of airborne spread during past outbreaks required improvement both for farmers and for policy decision makers. In this study a free license computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code was used to simulate airborne virus spread.
