Inductive empiricism, emphasizing realism and generality, represents the received view with the classic Grounded Theory Methodology as a prime example. This paper argues for openness to theory specialization in practical disciplines such as IS. Theory specialization implies sacrificing a generality of theories for their realism and precision. The distinctive attention of the paper lies in scientific idealization, sacrificing the realism of theories for their precision and generality. It has almost been completely omitted in the literature on IS theory building. The special focus of this paper lies in IT applications as a category of IT artifacts and in design-oriented theories that provide knowledge of how to design “better” IT applications. This paper illustrates its points using TAM/UTAUT research.

Besides opportunities, this phenomenon also poses challenges to the host nations of promoting social integration of immigrants. Continuing an earlier Design Science Research project that developed an open learning platform for Civic Orientation in Sweden, this paper attempts to extend this platform using Jurgen Habermas' Theory of Communicative Action as an inspiration. We aim at designing a more inclusive open learning platform for social integration that supports instrumental, strategic, normatively-regulated, dramaturgical, and communicative action. We expect to further the relevance of philosophy in IS research by not only making sense of phenomena through philosophical lens, butalso attaining inspirations from philosophy in designing sociotechnical information systems.

However, previous RBV-based research on the competitive potential of IT has paid inadequate attention to IT applications, which are a combination of application software and (digital) information content. Conducting an RBV-inspired analytical-argumentative evaluation, we challenge this view and argue that different types of IT applications as sub-group of technology-based IT assets differ in their potential to yield competitive parity, temporary and sustainable competitive advantage. More specifically, we show that out of nine types of IT applications, one has the potential to yield competitive parity only, three have the potential to yield temporary competitive advantage, and five actually have the potential to yield sustainable competitive advantage. Based on our theoretical analy...

The results show that perceived system quality and perceived information quality are significant predictors of user satisfaction with the system, but not of system use. Perceived system quality was also a significant predictor of system use. User satisfaction was found to be a strong predictor of individual impact, whereas the influence of system use on individual impact was insignificant.

The framework is based on a sociocybernetic interpretation of information systems design as human action and information systems design methodologies as prescriptive instructions for this action concerning its different aspects. One of the basic assumptions of the sociocybernetic approach is the contingency theory presupposition that there is no one detailed information systems methodology which is best for all information systems design situations and that all methodologies are not equally goo in all situations. The framework is tested by analyzing form information systems design methodologies, EDM, ISAC, NIAM and REMORA. The results form an information base for a more synthetic evaluation and summary of the four methodologies in the second part. The following topics are covered: scope and content, support and usability, underlying assumptions, generality of methodologies, and scientific and practical value. The major features, comparative perceptions and evaluations are given.

It suggests that the infological problems identified by Langefors still capture much of the essence of IS as a discipline of computing. The essay also revisits the infological equation, showing its continued relevance in the field. Finally, it discusses some

Activity theory is argued to be particularly relevant in the context of knowledge work since the body of knowledge is a historically accumulated social construction. Situated activity theory makes a distinction between activities, tasks and encounters, the first two following the traditional distinction between activity and action in activity theory.

The goal of this panel is to serve as a forum to advance and discuss initial principles for what we are calling the social design of information systems. By social design we mean to emphasize that the presence and uses of information systems play an often significant role in supporting the reshaping social relations, social structures, social boundaries, and social norms. ...
