Avoimen vastarinnan sijasta saamelaiset ovat käyttäneet näkymättömämpiä arkipäivän vastarinnan muotoja, joista artikkelissa tarkastellaan toimintaa Tenon saamelaisten keskuudessa 1920- ja 1930-luvuilla. Aineistona on käytetty erityisesti E. N. Mannisen tekstejä. Erityisesti porovarkaudet nousivat Mannisen kuvauksissa näkyväksi merkiksi kahden kulttuurin erilaisista arvoista

It is not only important to return items, such as photographs, but also to reconstruct the knowledge around them: to re-identify the old encounters and stories. The article suggests that the earlier interpretations have emphasised the inter-ethnic relations between the Sámi and the majority societies. When returned to local levels of Sámi communities, however, to be interpreted through the lenses of the Sámi subjects, the photographs tell multiple visualized stories about intra-ethnic "our histories", the recent past of families, kinships and small Sámi communities. The article is based on my experiences and the projects that have been carried out in Finland in the past 15 years, repatriating photographs to Sámi societies.

The focus in the articles varies between research history, historiography and history of science. Thematically, the articles range from longer overviews of the historical evolution and transformation of "Lappology" in their national settings to more focused articles on individual scholars, as well as an article on Sámi historiography with a methodological approach. Two articles focus on the genesis of more culturally sensitive Sámi research.

The Germans ruled as occupiers in Norway, but had no jurisdiction over the civilians in Finland, their brothers-in-arms. In general, however, encounters between the local people and the Germans appear to have been cordial in both countries. Concerning the role of racial ideology, it seems that the Norwegian Nazis had more negative opinions of the Sámi than the occupiers, while in Finland the racial issues were not discussed. The German forces demonstrated respect for the reindeer herders as communicators of important knowledge concerning survival in the Arctic. The herders also possessed valuable meat reserves. Contrary to this, other Sámi groups, such as the Sea Sámi in Norway, were ignored by the Germans, resulting in a forceful exploitation of sea fishing. Through the North Sámi concept birget (coping with), we analyse how the Sámi both resisted and adapted to the situation. The cross-border area of Norway and Sweden is described in the article as an exceptional arena for transnational reindeer herding, but also for the resistance movement between an occupied and a neutral state.

Active Sámi-related legislation work has resulted in multilevel and fruitful development on local and regional levels especially in 1990s. Special institutions have emerged for the Sámi self-government, such as the Sámi Parliaments in each Nordic country. Sámi culture is a matter of pride for many, because different forms of Sámi art, for example, are internationally renowned. The Sámi also have a significant role in the politics of indigenous peoples of the world.1 The success of the Sámi has been due to transnational activities, shuttling from local and national levels to the Nordic Sámi community and to the cooperation of indigenous peoples. From the beginning, Sámi politics in Nordic countries has looked for international parallels and solutions. Already in the beginning of 20th century, the civil activity through Sámi organizations in...
