I'm new to the wonderful beauty that is WSD, but know that it'll stick with me forever. I fell so in love with it I went looking for a WSD community to be part of, and found the Owsla!It all started last school year, when a coworker suggested I read the book, as he knew I liked fantasy and books with an otherworldly quality to them. I picked up WSD over the summer, but didn't get a chance to start it given my limited time. Now, I'm a full-time high school teacher and working on my MFA in fiction writing, so a lot of what I read is dictated by my job and what my professors have me read. This semester I got to choose my own reading list, so I put WSD on it and read it for my April analytical paper.I've read many books in my time, but nothing like this one. The characters moved me; the scenery and setting and description were breathtaking. I loved the element of storytelling, which really developed the rabbits as an actual culture all their own (and I got a great laugh at the story about the great hutch built to withstand the flood waters!). And when I got to the end, that wonderful, bittersweet, perfect ending, I cried. I bought the movie... and I cried. I love this book.It's hilarious to get peoples' reactions when I gush about the novel; they ask what it's about, and I say, "Talking rabbits," and they get kind of skeptical. I think it's a book that really needs to be experienced. And now that I have experienced it, I can't fathom how I went this long in my life without reading it!So anyway, I am looking forward to being a part of the community, and sharing in on the joy and wonder that is WSD. I find that it's always nice to find likeminded people to share with, so I'm glad to be a part of the LJ Owsla. Monday, April 21st, 2008 3:50 pm - Watership Down storytapes. wolff_slaven Back in the early 90's, there was a company called 'The Mind's Eye' and they made/sold story tapes of all kinds of great stories. Think we used to get the catalog in the mail since my mom belonged to some book clubs. Well, my mom purchased the Watership Down book on tape which consisted of 4 tapes and it is just about one of the greatest things ever....I think this production is far better than the movie and for a book on tape it will move you to tears. I still have the tape set but it is in somewhat poor condition and threatening to deteriorate....does anyone have any information on this company? I *think* I saw a CD version of it back at Border's in 1999 and I am kicking myself for never purchasing it.....I have considered trying to make my own CD copy of it but I'm not sure how to go about that.Here's the cover (it's abouu as large as a VHS plastic case)"Here is the brilliant and imaginative novel about an intrepid band of rabbits who leave their doomed warren to find a new home at Watership Down. I wouldnt say its JUST another Watership Down tattoo...I put quite a bit of though into it since it was going to be my first. I settled on having the Blessing of El-ahrairh Tattooed on my forearm, wrapping it from wrist to elbow in an old typwriter style font. "El-ahrairah, your people cannot rule the world for I will not have it so. All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a thousand Enemies, and when the catch you they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listenner, prince with a swift warning. No marks to WH Smith, who didn't have any copies of WD at all; slightly better marks to Waterstone's, who at least had the usual Puffin paperback; and full marks to Borders, who had the Penguin and Puffin versions, and this 35th anniversary edition. (And shelved under the "Classics" section of the children's department, too!)It's a hardback, not much bigger than the usual paperbacks, with an RRP of £9.99. The best thing about it is certainly the cover art, which I think is is very attractive. Inside, it seems to be the Puffin Modern Classics edition, complete with Nicholas Tucker's Afterword (the newer version, with the slight complaints about sexism cut out). The typeface and pagination matches that version, not the usual Puffin/Penguin paperbacks. Nothing wrong with it, but I do prefer the traditional looks.What is disappointing is the total lack of anything new, that cover aside. There is a line-drawing illustration to start each of the four parts of WD, but again those are identical to the Puffin Modern Classics book, while the map is the usual small monochrome affair too. I would have liked an introduction along the lines of the interesting one that Nicholas Lezard contributed to the Penguin Modern Classics edition a few years ago, and maybe the four-colour fold-out map found in some of the earlier hardback editions.Overall? I think this is one for the completists and obsessive fans of the book. I wasn't expecting it - after all, there was no 25th or 30th anniversary edition - and I will probably end up buying it, seeing as I am an obsessive fan of the book... but you're going to be disappointed if you buy the 35th anniversary edition on the strength of that cover and expect to find anything new inside.Also of note: Borders had two copies of Richard Adams' newish novel, Daniel. I've known that this was coming for quite a while now, as Mr Adams wrote to me about it a couple of years ago1, but despite a publication date of last October this is the first time I've seen it on the shelves. Those animated icons of rabbits sparked my interest and I had to find out more. (been a rabbit fanatic for a long time)Anyhow, I (finally) purchased my own paperback copy of Watership Down yesterday! As soon as I picked the book up, the adjacent one fell on my hand, as though begging for attention. It was a paperback Tales from Watership Down. =:) Oh yes. I was happy.To top it all off, just a few moments ago I randomly peered out my back window to see if any rabbits were visible. (We have a small warren growing in thick underbrush on the other side of a metal fence) Not ten feet away from the window, in full view, were two baby rabbits, perhaps of the same litter, that could've both easily fit in the palm of my hand. *dies of cute* They were apparently enjoying an evening silflay. Picture Hazel and Fiver as they might've looked as kittens. *dies of cute again*Sorry, no pictures, though. MY KINGDOM FOR A DIGITAL CAMERA!!! =;,,(I know it's best to not interfere with wild rabbits when they feed, but it was so tempting to go and throw out a bit of flayrah.
