The survey was based upon the principle that past human activity and its associated debris usually creates slight but persistent changes in the local magnetic environment. Both topsoil magnetic measurements and localised magnetometer survey were employed. The survey produced a single ephemeral anomaly, curvilinear and magnetically negative in nature, which was seen to correspond in part with a subtle topographic hollow. A zone of disturbed ground along the northern extremity of the sports field was also apparent; the nature of these signals, which were dominated by ferrous and other highly magnetic material, suggests this disturbance to be of relatively recent origin.

Nature Precedings, 2008

A recent computer-aided-design investigation of the Neolithic 56 Aubrey Hole circuit at Stoneheng... more A recent computer-aided-design investigation of the Neolithic 56 Aubrey Hole circuit at Stonehenge has led to the discovery of an astonishingly simple geometrical construction for drawing an approximately regular 56-sided polygon, feasible with a compass and straightedge. In the present work, we prove analytically that the aforementioned construction yields as a byproduct, an extremely accurate method for approximating a regular heptagon, and we quantify the accuracy that prehistoric surveyors may have ideally attained using simple pegs and ropes. We compare this method with previous approximations, and argue that it is likely to be at the same time the simplest and most accurate. Implications of our findings are discussed.

Research paper thumbnail of Geophysical surveys at Robinhood's Ball Causewayed Enclosure, Wiltshire in 2015

Gradiometer, earth resistance and magnetic susceptibility surveys of Robinhood’s Ball causewayed ... more Gradiometer, earth resistance and magnetic susceptibility surveys of Robinhood’s Ball causewayed enclosure and adjacent monuments were carried out by staff and students from Oxford University’s Department for Continuing Education in summer 2015. Key results of the survey included a large number of potential pits of unknown date both inside and outside the Neolithic enclosure circuits, an element of possible Bronze Age field system abutting the enclosure, and a second ring ditch within one of the adjacent Early Bronze Age round barrows.
