Canterbury Health System, considered to be among to the most integrated in the world, places sign... more Canterbury Health System, considered to be among to the most integrated in the world, places significant emphasis on valuing patients’ time, trusting clinicians, fostering curiosity among its staff, and applying improvement science to further enhance organisational performance. While no system can be transferred wholesale elsewhere, there are numerous lessons that can be applied for others’ learning to ‘Make it Better’ for their citizens.

New Zealand’s health and disability system is mainly funded from general taxation. It has a publi... more New Zealand’s health and disability system is mainly funded from general taxation. It has a public and private healthcare system, which both offer high standards of care. In the public system, essential healthcare services are provided free or subsidized for some community services (including general practice) for all New Zealanders and people in New Zealand on a work permit valid for 2 years or longer. Emergency care is free as are specialist services and non-urgent surgery although access is prioritised on the basis of clinical need. Alongside the public system, private healthcare offers access to private hospitals for the treatment of urgent and non-urgent conditions. The network of private hospitals and clinics provides a range of services that include recuperative care, elective procedures and a range of general surgical procedures. There are also private radiology clinics and testing laboratories.

The effect of natural disasters internationally is linked to intensity and duration and the impac... more The effect of natural disasters internationally is linked to intensity and duration and the impact of these events for tertiary level professional students is not clearly understood. Following a 7.1 magnitude earthquake in New Zealand in 2010 (with aftershocks lasting 27 months) a number of tertiary nursing students experienced significant disruption to their studies. To compare the psychological health, resilience and the impact on learning for three cohorts of students engaged in tertiary nursing education during this time. A cross-sectional survey design and convenience sampling was used for three cohorts of learners. An online survey was completed (n = 290) and included: Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale; PTSD Checklist; Work and Social Adjustment Scale; Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale.
