A camera-trap record in Annapurna Conservation Area during a Mainland Clouded Leopard Neofelis nebulosa survey in January 2017, constitutes the first verifiable evidence of the species in the country since the nineteenth century. This authenticates the westernmost known limit of its current global distribution.

Hazards have the risk of being disaster. Disaster can be managed so that the loss is brought to minimum. Community based approaches has long been used to promote culture of safety and through reducing local vulnerabilities and building capacities. These approaches are diverse because of diverse socio-cultural context of different communities. Communities know best what their hazards are and have most if not all the required information about how to manage and reduce the risk of disaster. Local resources can be used. Knowledge and technologies based on age old experiences can be shared. While the community works to reduce risk, it will also strength the community as people tend to choose more and more safer livelihoods, communities connect with local authorities, vulnerable groups are identified and strengthened, and communities recognize the power of combined effort. However, they have been relatively neglected in comparison to other charismatic carnivores like tigers and snow leopards. Knowledge gap in distribution and status of canids in Nepal is large. This thesis aims to find out the status of canids, threats and potential habitat in Salpa Pokhari Periphery of Eastern Nepal.
The study area was Sungdel, Dobhane and Gudel VDC of eastern Nepal. Makalu Barun National Park is the nearest protected area. Mixed methods were employed to find the status of canids. Sign survey, vocalization survey and questionnaire interviews were conducted to find the status of canids. Conflicts and socio-economic value of canids were studied using questionnaire survey. GIS and remote sensing techniques were used to map the potential habitat of canids in the area.
The result showed presence of three canids, Dhole Cuon alpinus, Golden Jackal Canis aureus and Red Fox Vulpes vulpes in the area. However, Dhole might have been locally extinct from the study area. Signs of Golden Jackal and Red Fox were found during the survey. Golden Jackal was found to be most problematic due to poultry raiding. Dholes were responsible for livestock depredation. Killings of all three canids were found with Golden Jackals being killed the most. Golden Jackal were also used in traditional healing. Potential habitat of Dhole, Golden Jackal and Red Fox was found to be 214.70, 297.99, and 71.78 sq.km respectively.
