AN: First Nemi fic ever written by me. This is my OTP, so comments would be very much loved. If you haven't read/watched The Secret, then I'm pretty much summarizing the whole thing for you. Kind of. I'm really crappy at explaining things. Dedicated to a friend of mine, her name is Millie, because she's the one person that got me into Nemi.
Disclaimer: I do not own any mentions of a movie, celebrities, books or songs.
“What’s she doing?”
“I don’t know – looking at the birds and the trees. I don’t know.”
Ever since they’d befriended her on the set of Camp Rock in some part deep in the woods of Canada, Nick had been watching her. He’d watch him from his cabin window; she would be sitting on a log with a guitar, or just her iPod, listening to music with her back to him. Of course, Kevin and Joe knew about this, how could they not know about this? He did it every single time he caught the little brunette girl outside, doing what she was doing.
“How do you know?”
“I don’t.”
It was Joe who always asked all the annoying questions. But he ignored the annoyance and answered them all, just because he knew the answer – he knew without really knowing. He liked thinking that he knew everything about her. By now, Joe was looking at his little brother with this weird expression that said – “you’re in love, you moron. Why don’t you go ask her out?” Nick knew this look, Joe gave it to him every time and he’d learned how to ignore it.
“She’s listening to Gravity, that John Mayer song,” Nick commented, his eyes never straying away from her. He knew, he could even see the hesitation in her eyes whenever the song changed, trying to decide quickly if she was going to skip it or not.
“How do you know?”
“She’s mouthing out the words.”
Joe scoffed. “So you can read lips now?”
“Just hers and Miley’s,” he answered, flinching a bit at the thought of the other girl. He didn’t want to think about past romances now, especially now that the girl just outside the window had caught his eye. “I know their lips.”
Nick thought of the strangest things sometimes. Things that you’d probably never even think of unless brought up in a conversation. One day, on the set while they were in school, he thought about if it was possible to sneeze so hard that a person’s brain would out of one’s nose or the back of one’s head. Either or. That day, instead of paying attention like he normally would, he was face down on his notebook, doodling down the scenario. She was sitting next to him that day, so like the curious girl she was, she leaned over and peeked at whatever Nick was doing.
A small laugh had managed to escape her lips, rather than a disgusted look like he had first expected. It was just right, not loud enough to catch the teacher’s attention. The sudden sound had caught him off guard. He looked up, surprised, and stared at her for a while and that big smile on her face. She, most of the time, found all things funny. She was just that kind of person, always looking for the happy in every single tragic or angry situation. “You forgot to draw on the eyebrows,” she whispered to him, pointing at the piece of paper subtly as her eyes traced over the drawing. Just before the day had ended, Nick decided to give her the drawing. Nick wasn’t the best cartoonist in the world, but she kept it anyway, in her back jean pocket, maybe to be forgotten and forever stored away there.
Other than the frequent exchange they had in class, they didn’t speak to each other that much. Most of the time, it would be Joe asking Demi to visit their cabin to play some kind of board game. The whole time, she, Joe or Kevin – or maybe all of the above – would be laughing. Nick would be on his bed behind a book. He was the kind of guy that watched things from afar – like right now. He’d crack a smile, chuckle a little if a joke would be loud enough to reach his ears. Without the aid of at least one of his brother or his dog, Elvis, he’d be completely useless and boring.
Kevin was different from Joe in many ways. For once, he didn’t ask all the questions, most of the time he’d just watch Nick watch Demi. He’d give Nick all of these weird faces at the back of his head because the younger boy wouldn’t be looking at him. He couldn’t tell Nick to just go out there and talk to her, because they’ve talked to each other before. With that being thought of, the oldest brother had decided to just not say anything.
“They’ll figure it out,” he muttered as he exited the room to leave Nick to whatever he’d get up to.
It was another one of those days. Nick was alone in their cabin, sitting by the window with a guitar in his hands. Demi was outside again, doing the same. The boy was strumming along to a few chords, only uttering the words, some of them not even making it out of his lips. It didn’t matter, nobody was listening. After a while, he set his guitar down and all of a sudden it starts to rain and the girl was out of his sight.
Maybe it made sense that if you’re outside, playing on your guitar and it starts to rain, you run the nearest dry shelter. Maybe it made sense that it started raining on purpose to bring both of them together – that was definitely the story Nick was going to tell his grandchildren one day. He had to take a step back for a moment, because seriously – grandchildren?
Demi was smiling, like always, even in this kind of weather. Nick wasn’t – he had that kind of blank, intense expression that he was sure was unreadable to most people. Not when he was around Demi, though – he felt like an open book at those times.
They had been there for almost an hour now, just Nick going around the room to check on his cellphone, go to the bathroom, check on the mirror, his things and all his shenanigans. He felt like he couldn’t keep steady at doing one thing as Demi sat on his bed, plucking all the notes away. Of course, she didn’t know it was Nick’s bed. All she knew that it was the neatest one in the room, thus the most attractive one. Nick didn’t say anything; he sat on Joe’s bed instead.
Nick was just starting to realize that after the short time they had spent together, this was the first time they’ve ever been left in a room together, alone. As Nick realized this, he looked down on his hands, playing with his fingers and the right around one of them. He stole a sideways glance at her to see that she’s moved on to lying down on the bed, his copy of The Secret in her hands. Then he started to wonder if she already knew that it was his bed.
“Have you read this book?”
The boy had to do a double take, wondering if he just imagined her voice or was she really speaking. “What?”
“The book,” she repeated, looking at him questioning as she waved it around in the air for a moment. “It’s yours, right?” she asked, smiling this time. She pointed at his name that was messily written on the first page of the book.
Nick could feel his ears go red. Maybe his neck, too. “Uh,” he cleared his throat. “Yeah, I have. What about uh… you?”
Demi nodded, looking enthusiastic at the subject. She got up, sitting at the edge of the bed again like earlier. She patted the space next to her twice, telling Nick to come and sit next to her without uttering a word. Nick did as told (or as gestured), hesitantly taking his place right next to her. Reluctantly he leaned over to her, to see what part of the book she was reading.
“Oh,” he muttered under his breath when he realized, but Demi heard him. Her head snapped by his direction, Nick almost jumped back when he realized how close their faces were. But Demi didn’t seem to be fazed by all of this like Nick was. In fact, she smiled and nodded, “Yeah, the law of attraction thing’s really interesting.”
“It is,” he agreed, surprisingly finding his voice. “How your thoughts make your life and everything – it just makes sense.” As Nick talked, Demi nodded, genuinely listening as a smile grew on her face.
“If you think and concentrated on that one thing you want, it’ll come to you,” she added, closing the book and placing it beside her. She stared off somewhere for a while, Nick was just looking down on the floor, sometimes looking up to see what Demi was doing.
Nick’s mind had begun to wander off somewhere else. He was sure that he’d thought of Demi quite a couple of times, more than enough, maybe. Just then he started to wonder – why wasn’t she his yet? Or maybe she being here with him, alone with him was supposed to symbolize that. But there he was again, thinking too hard that he didn’t realize that the girl beside him had gone on to lying back down on the bed again, her back pressed against the wall. Her arms were wrapped around herself, maybe she was cold. Maybe she was just comfortable that way, but Nick was convinced it was the first option.
Without really thinking, he had laid himself down on the bed, too. Right next to Demi and he wouldn’t dare face her so he stared at the ceiling. Though, it wasn’t long before the girl rolled over and curled up against his side. Nick’s breath hitched up, breathing uneasily. He could hear her breathe beside him, he counted her breaths. It took thirteen breaths to work up the nerve. By the fourteenth breath, Nick’s arm was around Demi’s waist, hand resting on top of the skin on the small of her back.
“Did you think about me?” she asked. Nick didn’t answer, he just started tracing circles on her skin. Slowly, he began to actually relax. Muscles loosened up, lungs taking even breaths. Demi laughed at the lack of an answer, but she nodded anyway. “I did, too.”
Both of them had fallen asleep after that, neither of them waking up to notice that it had finally stopped raining. As time passed while their eyes were still closed, each of the two other brothers had made their way back inside the cabin only to find the scene slowly unfold to them. They were brothers; they knew each other well enough to already know what happened without really asking. They slept longer than both of them expected, a wonderful sixteen hours. But in those sixteen hours, Nick couldn’t remember a single dream that he had. He didn’t exactly know he’d wake up to one, either.
“Hey.”
His head slowly faced down, looking at the face that rested on top of his shoulders. He raised both of his eyebrows, surprised, yet staying calm. “You know we’re late for class already right?” he asked her.
Demi scoffed, rolling her eyes. “I know.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, I know.”
“Do you care?” Nick couldn’t help but smile. Seeing this, Demi couldn’t help to return the favor.
With a content sigh, she answered, “Not right now, no. My mom will probably call in to check, though. What about you, Nick?”
For Nick, it was strange to her his name from her lips. From her soft and sweet voice. It had managed to catch him of guard. He pulled her closer to him with his arm that was still around her. “We should get up,” he mumbled, leaning down to bury his face in her hair before he pulled away and got up from the bed.
By the time filming had already come to an end, all three brothers promised the girl that they’d see each other again, already scheduling studio sessions, already having big plans with her. Demi couldn’t agree more, and with a smile and a nod it was settled. After the conversation, the boys turned away and walked to a long, black car that would drive them to the airport.
As Nick was walking, Demi occupied his mind. He knew he’d see her again, but he couldn’t help but think how much he’s going to miss looking out the window and seeing here there. He’d miss trying to figure out the song she would be singing before realizing that the song was probably out of his knowledge. He’d miss seeing her smile everyday and the way it would make him do the same. He’d miss a lot of things, things that would take almost too long to write. With that thought, he managed to look back just in time to see the girl completely jump out of his daydream so she could run into his arms.
