Among these, idea generation is evaluated as having the highest impact on the quality of the final design solution since it is the phase that requires the generation of many (quantity), various (variety) and novel (novelty) ideas that will be further developed and resulted as the final product in the following phases of the design process. For the purpose of guiding and supporting designers in the design process and especially idea generation, various design methods and tools have been developed. However, these methods and tools are being criticized for 1) being ineffective in enhancing quantity, variety and novelty of the generated ideas, 2) not being experimentally tested by the researchers and 3) not being supported with illogical thinking, which is one of the essences of creative thinking.
This thesis aims to identify the needs of the idea generation process and offer a strategy for design students in order to foster the outcomes of the idea generation process. For this purpose, a mixed method research was conducted. The needs of the idea generation process were identified through observation and peer debriefing, a design tool (Fictionation) that integrates design fiction into idea generation was created and further developed through a pilot study, and workshops that adopt a quasi-experimental research model was conducted. The findings were evaluated by using the assessment technique that was developed within this thesis and interviews. The results have shown that the Fictionation tool is promising in terms of fostering the outcomes of the idea generation process by increasing quantity, variety and novelty of the generated ideas and achieving an efficient learning and teaching environment within design education.

This course is offered in the first year to initiate students to the theory, practice and communication of design and to lay a basis on which more advanced and specialized knowledge will be gathered throughout the rest of their design education and careers. However, the course's results, influence in design education and methods of conduct receives many criticisms from students, educators, designers and researchers. Even though the course plays a founding role in design education and is criticized for not being successful, there are very few studies on how this course should be formulated or updated. For this reason, a study is conducted in two stages with the students and instructors of METU Department of ID in order to assess basic design education within the scope of this department. The results of the fieldwork are examined in consideration of the criticisms found in literature to determine the major problems of this course and to offer suggestions for improvement.

It is the course where students are encountered with the phenomenon of design. Design based disciplines are divided into subfields such as industrial design, graphic design, interior design, etc. because of being a comprehensive field. Furthermore, disciplines such as architecture, city and regional planning and landscape architecture also concerns with design issues. Despite these disciplines generate different outputs in terms of scale and scope, their education contains similar basic design courses focusing mainly on the understanding of common design principles. Being a researcher and instructor who teach basic design to the departments of industrial design, architecture and city and regional planning, many similarities and differences have been observed. Presenting these similarities and differences and expressing the perspectives of different disciplines to basic design education would be valuable in terms of the transfer of knowledge. Therefore, this paper serves as an introduction and comparison of the approaches, projects and syllabus of the basic design course within the departments of industrial design, architecture and city and regional planning. The deductions and presentations of this paper might serve as an introduction for the instructors in terms of seeing how other disciplines approach to basic design and might enable them to take credit for enhancing their basic design course.

Even though the user evaluates the building by using adjectives, there are many important notions in the background of these adjectives such as, visual balance, composition, proportion, angles, relation and integrity of the elements. These notions are one of the acquisitions that are tried to be brought to the students in the basic design studios of the first year of architectural education. In that way, students have the opportunity to learn design element that are associated with the alphabet of design, and design principles and composition that are associated with the grammar of design in order to make a sentence and write a story in their further education. In the architecture and design-based disciplines, composition refers to the relations of the elements that The elements that make no sense when they are presented on their own, can make sense with their relations, positions, sizes, angles, in brief with the composition that they constitute. The concept of composition is generally taught by using cardboard based geometrical shapes that are cut into different shapes and sizes within the architectural and design education. The compositions created by the students are criticized by the instructors. In that way students have the opportunity to see what is right and wrong done both by themselves and their fellows. However, studies show that students have problems in transferring their basic design knowledge that were leant by abstract compositions to the practical design problems in further educational years. The aim of this study is to bring a new perspective into basic design education by working on the geometric analysis of concrete examples instead of abstract exercises for the purpose of transferring composition concept to the students. In that sense, the basic design studio of the Department of Architecture of the Pamukkale University constitutes the scope of the study. The findings show that the geometric analysis work carried out by the students in terms of providing the understanding of the design elements and their relations with each other, the change of the students' perspectives on the buildings, the development of their observation skills. Furthermore, the Miro platform used, was found useful in terms of the opportunity it created to work together remotely, its usefulness and the opportunity to examine other works.

As one of the most significant artefacts associated with characters and pareidolia, cars and car faces are the subject of the study. Previous studies state that car faces are likened to animal and human faces, and therefore personal characteristics are attributed to them. However, they have fallen short in identifying design languages that cause cars to be perceived as such. In that sense, this study presents a structural analysis of 27 automobile faces in which patterns were identified and the resulting design languages were compared with the manufacturers’ definitions. The results show a correlation between rounded headlights and flattened grills with a plain character, and inclined quadrilateral or triangular headlights, bulky grills, and cut lamps with a dynamic and confident character. Furthermore, design trends for car faces from the 2000s to the 2020s were presented.

The Design Journal, 2023

EN | Emblems and logos, which are the most significant factors of corporate identity, play a role to promote the organization's character, products, services and to increase the organization's competitiveness and brand value. The results of the related studies argue that there is a major impact of fonts, colors, elements and shapes used in emblems and logos on users' perception. As the result of the literature review conducted within this context, the lack of studies examining the font, color, shape and context elements used in university logos in Turkey has been identified and the emblems and thus the logos of 200 universities in Turkey constitute the scope of the study. The aim of the study is to find out general tendencies and current trends and to form a base for related future studies by analyzing the emblems and logos in terms of form, color, and context. The general survey model was used as the data collection method and emblems and logos were grouped using content analysis and thematic coding. Additionally, the classifications of Çeken and Aybay (2021) and Özsoy, Tuncay and Uğur (2017) were used to analyze the elements of emblems and logos. In the light of the findings, emblems and logos in free form, consisting of one or two colors and containing symbolic and/or typographic elements are recommended for newly established universities in order to follow current design trends.

The study offers the Refined Novelty and Explored Variety (RNEV) technique as an outcome-based assessment technique. This technique is used against the idea generation outcomes of 45 students obtained through the Morphological Chart method, comprising 3185 sketches. The ideas are categorized into a genealogy tree for visualizing the solution spaces of the students, and their novelty and variety scores are calculated. The correlation is investigated between the scores and the final jury grades assigned for the success of the resulting design solutions. Results show that there is a significant positive correlation between the novelty and variety scores of the ideas, and the final jury grades.

This paper describes a study in which the Fictionation design tool has been pilot tested in an Inter- active Prototyping elective undergraduate course with industrial design students. The aim was to encourage design divergence, by inviting students into a fictional world where restrictive considerations of the design process do not exist for them. The study was carried out with thirteen students using the design tool in the idea generation phase of their projects. The submissions were analyzed for their visual contents. The results show that students were able to diverge in their design exploration, offering variety and novelty in their design ideas. Divergence in the idea generation phase of the design process in design education allows the students to extend the boundaries of the design solution space, and provide variety of ideas within this space, which in return, reflect on the quality of the final design solution.
