The following questions were addressed : what was the date of the pottery ? ; was it locally made ? ; if not, from where in the Nile Valley did it come ? ; how did the local and imported pottery compare in relation to shape, technology and fabric. It was concluded that pottery from sealed contexts was of XIIth Dynasty date, with one example not known before the late XIIth Dynasty. Threequarters of it was locally made but closely imitated, in shape and technique, the Nile silt tableware of the Memphis/Faiyum region. Most of the imports were storage jars from the same region. In summary, the evidence indicates that professional potters accompanied expeditions in the XII-XIIIth Dynasties; that they came from the region of the Residence at Lisht ; and that they specialised in the production of Nile silt tableware. Later XIIIth dynasty and New Kingdom pottery, bu...

The first season's work took place in spring 1997 in the sector of the settlement to the south-west of the fortress and in the sector of the cemeteries to the south-east. Excavations at the settlement revealed 14 buildings, mostly two-storey dwellings dated to the Hellenistic period, and a building of religious nature dated, in its later phase of use, to the early Roman period. The cemeteries sector has so far yielded some 130 tombs divisible into 6 categories. A taphonomic analysis of the bones found in certain tombs and a palaeodemographic study have provided initial information about the population of the cemeteries during the Ptolemaic period.

Several strings of titles for senior officials from central or local administration reveal that there was one favored short version of a title (the title-"root" or a variant of this same title-"root", to which was added a geographical, chronological or institutional indication. These latter additions vary according to the context.
