Do men and women learn differently or have different preferred ways of learning? To address this concern, faculty members should understand their students' learning style preferences. We are interested in developing teaching approaches to address the learning needs of all of our medical students. To better understand our learners and their learning style characteristics, we administered Flaming's VARK questionnaire for assessing sensory modality. Methods: Participants in this study consisted of 1 st year medical students at Government Medical College, Kota, India. A total of 155 students completed the questionnaire (59 female and 57 males). The VARK questionnaire was used to identify one facet of student learning styles, the sensory modality by which they prefer to take information. Result: Males (92.98%) and females (76.27%) preferred information to reach them via multiple sensory modalities. In addition only 15.52% of all students (6.25% males and 23.75% females) preferred using a single sensory modality for information intake. There was a significant gender difference in the percentages of males and females students who preferred multimodal or unimodal styles of information presentation (p<0.05). Some students preferred two modes (32.07% male vs 26.66% females), some students preferred three modes (47.16% male vs 40% female), and some students preferred four modes (20.75 male vs 33.33% female). There were no gender differences in the percentage of males and female students who preferred bi-, tri-, or quadmodal styles of information presentation (p>0.05). Conclusion: Although both males and females preferred multimodal learning but in different degree. Significant variation between the genders were revealed (p<0.05). As teachers, we need to assess and understand how to reach all students by understanding how to present the information in multiple modes. We can help students more effectively; both in and out of the classroom, if we are aware of their learning style.

Its elastic properties reduce the risk of musculoskeletal wear and impairment. Various methods of its estimation have been presented by researchers. With this basis the aim of the study is to find the value of MLA by the devised mid-footprint planter angle method and compare it with the standard navicular height method. Methodology: Purposive analytical and comparative study done on 1st year health professional students of Sumandeep Vidyapeeth University (2015–2016 batch). MLA was estimated by the navicular height method and mid-footprint planter angle method on footprint after collecting their demographic and anthropometric data. The calculated values of MLA for both feet were compared by correlation coefficient by two different methods and Kruskal–Wallis test for the comparison as per body mass index (BMI) of participants. Results: Statistical significance was observed for right (−3.57 ± 0.85; P < 0.0001) and left (−6.4 ± 0.91; P < 0.0001) foot for MLA values by two methods, with higher level of Kappa agreement for right (0.755) and left (0.794) foot. Higher to middle level of correlation was observed for both the feet as per the two methods. Statistical significance as per gender was observed for left foot by navicular height method. While, no statistical significance was observed for MLA values as per BMI for both feet as per two methods. Conclusion: MLA values estimated by mid-footprint planter angle and compared by the standard navicular height method concludes that this method can be used in place of the gold standard in day-to-day basis, but extensive work needs to be done before considering it as a replacement, specifically in terms of sample size.

Objective: To determine medical students perception of different visual aids like black board (BB), over head projector transparencies (OHPT) and, LCD and to generate recommendations for their optimal use. Methods: A questionnaire based study was carried out among first year MBBS students of Government Medical College, Kota, India. The survey was undertaken among 84 Medical students of first year MBBS of batch 2008 after exposing them to different visual aids like BB, OHPT and LCD in Physiology lectures. A few lectures were absolutely on BB, and some were on OHPT and on LCD. Few classes were taken with mixed visual aids. Students were exposed for such visual aids for one year and then they were requested to complete a questionnaire. Data were statistically analyzed by One Sample Chi-square test. Results: 55 (65.48%) students rated chalk & black board as best visual aids in ...

The modulation of the activities of the immune activation by nutrients or specific food items fed in amounts above these normally encountered in the diet are defined as Immunonutrients. Few examples are -3 polyunsaturated fatty acid, Glutamine, Arginine, Nucleotides, Taurine, Probiotics and many more. Use of these nutrients to hospitalised patients decrease the length of stay in hospitals and also infection rate. Glutamine has an essential nutrients for immune cells and important modulator of gut barrier function and it is also a substrate for glutathione synthesis. Thus it plays a pivotal role as an antioxidant thus has more specific effect on the function of lymphocytes. Arginine is an essential amino acids during growth and may become essential in catabolic state. It is the precursor for nitric acid (NO) which is important for immune function, th...

In 1955 Lerner and Takahashi first developed a so-called bioassay for melatonin determination based on a qualification of frog skin blanching Now melatonin is considered a hormone (N-acetyl-5 methoxy tryptamine) produced especially at night in pineal gland. Its secretion is stimulated by dark and inhibited by light, which takes place in the pinealocytes, the cellular unit of the pineal gland. Tryptophan is converted to serotonin and finally converted to melatonin, which is an Indole. Melatonin is metabolized to 6-hydroxyl-mel in the liver and the main metabolite excreted is 6-sulphatoxy-mel and this excretion urinary component is helpful in assessing pineal gland function especially in children

The prevalence of these misconceptions ranged from 75.60% to 25.30%. Methods: A list of questionnaire was selected that were diagnostic for difficulties that can seriously interfere with students mastery of the topic. Diagnostic questions were generally of the form: ‘If x increases, then will y increases/decrease/show no change’. Results: The result suggests that students have a number of underlying conceptual difficulties about cardio-vascular phenomena. Our possible source of some misconceptions is the students’ inability to apply simple general models to specific cardiovascular phenomena. Conclusion: UG students may ‘understand’ less than they appear to ‘know’. Some implications of these results for teachers of physiology and medicine are explained.

Twenty two physiology faculty members from seven different medical colleges responded to the 23- question survey; fifteen of the respondents also responded to a request for written comments about this issue prior to taking survey. Three categories of possible factors contributing to physiology being hard to learn were defined; (1) the nature of the discipline, (2) the way it is taught and (3) what students bring to the task of learning physiology. Respondents thought that characteristics of students (they believe that duration of 1year is less and physiology course is extensive which teachers try to complete rapidly and characteristics of the discipline (that physiological phenomenon needs to be understood at different level of organizational level simultaneously) were significantly more important than the way it is taught...

The hormonal changes occurring during this cyclic process not only affect oocyte maturation and the endometrial and vaginal environments but can also have an effect on a number of other physiological and biochemical phenomena. AIM AND METHOD: We investigated the changes in serum calcium, magnesium and inorganic phosphorus levels during different phases of the menstrual cycle in fifty healthy young women. We found subtle but significant variations in these levels in the menstrual, follicular and luteal phases. RESULT: The serum calcium level was highest in the follicular phase whereas the serum magnesium level was lowest in the follicular phase; the serum inorganic phosphorus levels was highest in the menstrual phase. CONCLUSION: These variations could be due to the impact of the changing estrogen and progesterone secretion on the parathyroid glands.

This study aimed to assess and compare the empathy score with other institutes within and outside India using the Jefferson Scale of Empathy-Student version (JSE-S). Methods We did a cross-sectional study for undergraduate medical students and interns of Pramukhswami Medical College, Karamsad, for 4 months from October 2019. Voluntary participants completed the JSE-S, an internationally validated 20-item survey questionnaire. Results The mean empathy score of 575 voluntary participants out of 631 was 100.75, with women having higher and significant scores than men (F 102.1 [11.5]; M 98.3 [12.5]; p<0.001). The highest empathy score was observed in the first year (102 [10.8]), which increased and decreased in different years of medical education with a maximum dip in the second year (99.4 [11.5]). The choice of specialty of participants showed a ...
