Studies of the relations and interactions between Christians and Muslims have predominantly empha... more Studies of the relations and interactions between Christians and Muslims have predominantly emphasised the differences and antagonisms of the two groups. Few of such studies have taken off with expectations of the possibility of similarities. This study applied the assumptions and principlesof Communication Infrastructure Theory to study a Muslim group and a Catholic group in the University of Ibadan. With a focus on their communication infrastructure, the study sought to explain community attachment and civic participation within these groups. The paper alsoinvestigated the identities constructed through community storytelling activities, and the extent to which the deployment of the communicationinfrastructure promoted community engagement among members. This article is a study of the influence of social media on political participation of youths in ... more This article is a study of the influence of social media on political participation of youths in Nigeria through a review of the methodology, research themes and theoretical trends. The research method was a content analysis of forty-four relevant empirical articles. Findings showed that the predominant themes were political participation, social media and ethnicity. Most of the reviewed studies employed surveys, desktop research or critical review of literature as their research method. Most reviewed studies either adopted quantitative or qualitative research method and without a theoretical framework. It was evident that many studies in the global north did not link political participation to ethnicity, unlike those that were carried out in Nigeria. In addition, there were few studies on the influence of social media on the political participation of youths. Most twitter users supported either All Progressive Party (APC) or Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)... more Most twitter users supported either All Progressive Party (APC) or Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the 2015 Nigerian elections. In the midst of this, an unusual political alignment emerged which was called Fencism who neither supported any of the two political parties but claimed to be objective despite having a political opinion. This study investigated the definition and characteristics of Fencism using survey, quantitative and qualitative content analysis. The rational choice theory was the framework used in this study. Findings revealed that Fencism is a distinct political alignment and a manifestation of the rational choice theory. Yet there was no consensus on the definition owing to the irreconcilable ambiguity of remaining objective and but yet professing a bias.

Nigeria witnessed #Occupy Nigeria Protests in January 2012, following government's removal of sub... more Nigeria witnessed #Occupy Nigeria Protests in January 2012, following government's removal of subsidy on premium motor spirits. This study looked at the frames employed by the old and new media respectively in the #Occupy Nigeria Protest. The three collective action frame building tasks proposition of the framing theory: motivation, diagnosis and prognosis were employed in the content analysis of the samples. The three national newspapers were Nigerian Tribune, the Guardian and the Punch while the social media samples were an Occupy Nigeria Facebook page, blog posts, conversations in Nairaland and Twitter. Findings revealed that newspapers were better than social media in framing the motivation, diagnosis and prognosis of the protest. It also showed that the newspapers presented a more heterogeneous narration of the protest. This study holds that newspapers are better contributors to the discourse of the #Occupy Nigeria Protests than social media.

Authors employed content analysis to investigate similarities and differences in the frames adopted by social media (Facebook page, blogs, conversations in Nairaland and Twitter) and three national newspapers (the Nigerian Tribune, The Guardian and The Punch) during the protest. Findings show that the old media fared better than the social media in their framing of the motivation, diagnosis and prognosis of the protest. This study established that representatives of the old media were better contributors to the prosecution and/or discourse of the Occupy Nigeria Protests than the social media.
