Suzuki’s cute and cuddly Vitara SUV is getting a facelift, bringing with it a pair of new engines and a number of new safety features underneath its mildly revised exterior.

It’s just the one new engine, actually, as only the 1.0 litre Boosterjet turbocharged petrol engine has yet to be seen on a Vitara before; introduced on the facelifted S-Cross, it makes 115 PS and comes standard on the SZ4 and SZ-T trims. The larger 1.4 litre unit on the range-topping SZ5 variant was previously reserved for the sportier Vitara S and it produces 140 PS and 220 Nm of torque from 1,500 to 4,000 rpm.

Transmissions have yet to be detailed but expect them to follow the S-Cross, with a standard five-speed manual for the 1.0 litre, a six-speeder on the 1.4 and a six-speed automatic option for both. AllGrip four-wheel drive is available on the SZ-T with the manual gearbox.

The Vitara also gets a big hike in safety kit, with the SZ5 receiving Dual Sensor Brake Support (autonomous emergency braking), Lane Departure Warning and Prevention, Traffic Sign Recognition, a Blind Spot Monitor and rear cross traffic alert.

Elsewhere, not much has changed – the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it changes include a new upper grille with six vertical bars, along with chrome surrounds for the LED daytime running lights. These lead into the lower grille, which has also been redesigned and ditches its silver surround. There are also new LED tail lights, a new alloy wheel design, a soft-touch upper dashboard on the inside and a new colour multi-info display.
