Racism and xenophobia phenomenon is not recently discovered rather it exists many decades now. How-ever, due to the situation that has been shaped in Europe and particularly in Greece by the immigratory waves, racism emerged as a major issue that needs to be solved by the European Community. Education can help the new generation to understand and promote the social values of equality, isonomy, etc. Especially physical education has an important role to play in the transmission of such values through movement and games that create a unique way of non-verbal communication without the linguistic difficulties produced by different languages and culture. Using programs such as ‘‘Kallipateira’’ each physical educator is in position to develop and facilitate the inclusion of children with different color, language or social origin through their participation in physical activities.

The subjects involved in this study were four male and four female track and field athletes. The intervention program that used was a modified person-centered approach, combining selected aspects of Rogerian extended person-centered psychotherapy. Pre- and post- tests with Mental Readiness Form (MRF) were used to measure the effect of the person-centered approach in the level of anxiety and self-con- fidence of the athletes. Statistical differences were observed for trait anxiety (p= .047) and self-confidence (p= .035) between the pre- and the post- test. Non significant results were observed for the factor of state anxiety. It seems that the person-centered approach did reduce the trait anxiety among the athletes and their self- confidence. In the control group (1 boys' team n = 12; 3 girls' teams n = 39), no particular method was used apart from the pedagogical methods that coaches selected. Results revealed a statistically significant decrease in boys' scores on desire for performance and success between the pre- and posttest measurements. No significant change in girls' scores was observed. Thus, the 8-mo. treatment using the person-centered method did not improve volleyball players' motivation for performance.

The effect of a traditional dance training program on the physical fitness of adults with hearing loss. J Strength Cond Res 24(4): 1052-1058, 2010-The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a traditional dance training program on aerobic capacity and muscle strength of adults with hearing loss. Twenty-three adults with hearing loss were separated into 2 groups. Thirteen subjects (6 men, 7 women, mean age, 25.7 6 3.9 years) constituted the intervention group, whereas 10 subjects (5 men, 5 women, mean age, 26.4 6 5.9 years) formed the control group. Pretraining and posttraining treadmill tests were performed to determine heart rate (HR peak), peak minute ventilation ( _ V E peak), peak oxygen consumption ( _ VO 2 peak, absolute and relative), and time to exhaustion (min). Peak torque of hamstring and quadriceps muscles at angular velocities of 60°/s 21 , 180°/s 21 , and 300°/s 21 was also measured. The intervention group followed a 12-week traditional dance training program, whereas the control group received no training during this period. Repeated measures of multiple analyses of variance were used to test mean differences between the values of both groups. A paired t-test was used to compare the values within each group prior and after program participation. A significance level of 0.05 was used for all tests. Following the 12-week training program, significant improvements in peak physiological parameters were seen for the intervention group for peak minute ventilation, peak oxygen consumption (both absolute and relative), time to exhaustion, and peak torque values between the 2 measurements (initial and final). No significant improvements in peak physiological parameters and peak torque were noticed in the control group. In conclusion, adults with hearing loss can improve their physical fitness levels with the application of a systematic and well-designed traditional dance training program.

The VISA-P was developed in the English language to evaluate patients with patellar tendinopathy. The validity and use of self-administered questionnaires in different language and cultural populations require a specific procedure in order to maintain their content validity. The VISA-P questionnaire was translated and cross-culturally adapted according to specific guidelines. The validity and reliability were tested in 61 healthy recreational athletes, 64 athletes at risk from different sports, 32 patellar tendinopathy patients and 30 patients with other knee injuries. Participants completed the questionnaire at baseline and after 15-17 days. The questionnaire's face and content validity were judged as good by the expert committee, and the participants. Concurrent validity was almost perfect (ρ=-0.839, p<0.001). Also, factorial validity testing revealed a two-factor solution, which explained 85.6% of the total variance. A one-factor solution explained 80.8% of the variance when the other knee injury group was excluded. Known group validity was demonstrated by significant differences between patients compared with the asymptomatic groups (p<0.001). The VISA-P-GR exhibited very good test-retest reliability (ICC=0.818, p<0.001; 95% CI 0.758 to 0.864) and internal consistency since Cronbach's α analysis ranged from α=0.785 to 0.784 following a 15-17 days interval. The translated VISA-P-GR is a valid and reliable questionnaire and its psychometric properties are comparable with the original and adapted versions.
