Premodern Japanese law I am reading my readings for tomorrow's exam for the first time. Interesting bits! :D"In the trials of the Kamakura Period, documentary evidence and testimony by witnesses were carefully weighed by the Magistrate in arriving at his verdict, but in the absence of such evidence or witnesses, the disputants were required to swear to the gods that their claims were true. The outcome was then decided by whether some ill omen befell a disputants in the following 7 days. Among such signs were nosebleeding, sickness, choking while eating, the occurrence of misfortune among relatives and being wet by a crow or a kite."Posted via LiveJournal app for iPhone.Tags: via ljapp

Because faust_ina and I were talking about exchanging eulogies, and I thought of the beautiful obituaries in my favourite book of all time: The History of Love, by Nicole Krauss. So here are the bits I promised you, and then some. ♥2. WHAT I AM NOTMy brother and I used to play a game. I'd point to a chair. "THIS IS NOT A CHAIR," I'd say. Bird would point to the table. "THIS IS NOT A TABLE." "THIS IS NOT A WALL," I'd say. "THAT IS NOT A CEILING." We'd go on like that. "IT IS NOT RAINING OUT." "MY SHOE IS NOT UNTIED!" Bird would yell. I'd point to my elbow. "THIS IS NOT A SCRAPE." Bird would lift his knee. "THIS IS ALSO NOT A SCRAPE!" "THAT IS NOT A KETTLE!" "NOT A CUP!" "NOT A SPOON!" "NOT DIRTY DISHES!" We denied whole rooms, years, weathers. Once, at the peak of our shouting, Bird took a deep breath. At the top of his lungs, he shrieked: "I! HAVE NOT! BEEN! UNHAPPY! MY WHOLE! LIFE!" "But you're only seven," I said. **( 5. THE DEAD SEA IS THE LOWEST PLACE ON EARTHCollapse )**For those who know Jonathan Safran Foer (Everything is Illuminated, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close etc) she is his wife! Their tone and subject matter and style and everything are very similar. This may be good or bad, depending.Tags: words

why not the reverse? Nostalgia_A short story by Ng Yi-Sheng, based on Michael Lee Hong Hwee’s The National Columbarium of Singapore._It began with the children. They filed into my clinic like ants. Girls in pinafores, boys in tank tops. Walking like sleepwalkers. Listless faces printed with the same blank, impenetrable stare. She hears voices, said someone’s father. He was a burly Indian man. What kind of voices? I asked. No idea, he said. Like someone teaching school. Only everything in Chinese. I have dreams, said one little boy. Even when I’m awake. There are men and women. There are two crocodiles. And glass tanks. I’m full of fish. I’m full of books, a schoolgirl told me.I’m full of old people, said another.I’m full of Japanese soldiers, said a tiny six year-old. Pew pew pew pew pew pew.( these were the talkative onesCollapse ) Tags: words
