Volunteering with PEN

There are many ways you can volunteer at PEN Canada — whether it’s assisting at one of our special events, accompanying a writer to an immigration hearing, meeting for informal coffee chats with members of the Writers in Exile program to practice their English, or interning at the PEN office, we welcome your support.

To get involved, please email queries@pencanada.ca indicating your interest and availability to be a:

Event Volunteer: Event volunteers are called upon to lend a hand on the day of an event. Duties may include handing out programs, ushering, and managing a guest list.

Supporter for Writers in Exile: If you would like to get involved in PEN Canada’s Writers in Exile Program by accompanying writers to their hearings at the Immigration and Refugee Board or simply meeting for a coffee to chat. Your presence and support make a huge difference to them.

Intern: Interns work in the PEN office alongside PEN staff on either a full or part-time basis (9 am – 5 pm) depending on the project needs, desk availability, and your availability. Please indicate how many hours you can commit – ideally, PEN is looking for people who can give 3-8 hours a week.

PEN receives many volunteer and intern requests annually and while we do our best to accommodate everyone, there is always more interest than there is opportunity.
