permmembers (original) (raw)

Recently, one of my friends posted a poll about LJ wondering about the state of the service. He opined that everyone had forgotten about polls. In the course of answering him I decided that I need to post my comment in my main thread as well in order to reach a bigger audience.

I love the polls and they increase traffic on LJ. However, I now principally post on Dreamwidth and cross post to LJ. I am a permanent member of LJ and have access to polls. I don't have the same level on Dreamwidth.

The Lifeblood of LiveJournal is content. If there is no content there is no reason to be here. For the last two years or more I have been only posting public messages. There needs to be something for people to read when they login or they won't come back.

I have been surprised at what interested people. In the last month or so I have had three messages in the top 25 LJ messages. In some ways that is not good. Each of those messages had less that 10 comments. That tells me that no one is here. I am flattered that my Messages get recognized but it means there isn't much content here. Messages that earned that honor in the past had 30 or more comments.

Most of the time I don't just put up a photo or a Meme. I included my take on what you are seeing. I make it personal so it isn't just someone else's humor but mine as well. I give the readers something to think about.

It is true that many people left for FarceBook but some of them have been coming back. They need a reason for being here. A once a month posting just doesn't cut it.

I am disappointed that there have been so many members who have gone to a totally private journal. I have no way of judging whether I would enjoy what they have to say so I don't add them to my list.

One thing that I actually hate is those people who have their tweets automatically posted on LJ because it means they have given up on us. They somehow believe that they are staying connected but it is a one way street. They never come to see what the rest of us are saying.

I actually block messages that have the twitter tag from my friends view. If I want to read twitter I would have joined twitter.

Yes, there are a huge number of lurkers. They no longer contribute to LJ. Occasionally they will comment but not often. I know they are here because I have checked on their profile only to find that their last logon was very recent but their last post was ages ago.

As for "Oh NO they Didn't" I truly wish it would go away. I actively do not read that tripe.

I have tried the "Nudge a friend" without success. I wish it were possible to customize the message which is so cut and dried that it is ineffective. I have a hundred friends on the Nudge List and 90 percent of them haven't posted in over a year.

I may be the last one here left to shut off the lights. I don't have any answers.
