In the course of time and due to the development of science and technology, the understanding of the effective university foreign language classroom has changed. The most significant change took place during the pandemic when all the students had to attend online classes. Nevertheless, our assumption is that in view of the nature of the subject itself, teaching and learning languages either online or offline to science or humanitarian majors has common characteristics relevant to any type of the classroom. It has specific characteristics related to different educational traditions, ethnic cultures, learning environments, and primarily to the agents (both teachers and students) involved in the process. The purpose of this article is to explore what ideas are frequently proposed by researchers worldwide and their implementation in university foreign language classrooms in Russia and China both in online and offline types of teaching and learning. Materials and methods. T...

Гибкость и разноплановость ИОТ делают ее применение особенно успешным в программах дополнительного профессионального иноязычного образования при организации образовательной деятельности взрослых слушателей.

In this view, we assume that mobile devices can provide ample opportunities for students to interact and collaborate with their group-mates to enhance learning outcomes in university foreign language education. Interactive mobile homework assignments combined with individual ones can noticeably improve these outcomes from different perspectives. They engage students in communicative foreign language usage, encouraging both receptive and productive speech acts, student-to-student cooperation in learning through communication, peer-teaching, and pooling resources which promote the amplification of the learning environment through content and language sharing. On the other hand, interactive mobile homework assignments also have certain risks that may decrease the quality of learning, such as possible error exchange, a superficial approach, a switch...

The formation of universal competences (flexible skills) is an imperative of the modern education system, while foreign language proficiency is one of the key competences of a modern specialist. A foreign language as a subject has great potential for the interconnected development of both subject and meta-subject, universal competences. The research purpose is to analyze the textbooks and online courses that are actively used by university teachers and evaluate the structure of tasks used and their potential for the interconnected formation of intercultural competence and soft skills. Methodology and methods. Twenty-one teachers of Petrozavodsk State University took part in the survey. Criteria based on the framework of intercultural competence and soft skills were developed to evaluate learning materials. Based on the proposed criteria, six groups of tasks were identified that contribute to the interconnected development of intercultural competence and flexible skills...

It demonstrates the need for the development and application of specific educational tools which are based on complex goal focus and expected integral outcomes of university education. Multifunctional tasks are considered to be an effective way to form and to enhance both key and subject-specific competences. The article describes the main characteristics of such tasks and the essential conditions to implement them in university foreign language classrooms. Examples of multifunctional tasks intended for foreign language learning are presented and their potential for teaching non-language subjects is also outlined.

A sustained discontent of both university teachers and students with the outcomes of FL classes gave impetus for a systematic, detailed study of the university FL education of the target group of learners. There was an acute need to develop well-grounded guidelines for the related course objectives, its content and adequate techniques intended for the target group of learners. The authors claim that the generally accepted English for Specific Purposes (ESP) or Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) models of university FL education cannot be applied in this context for a number of reasons. A limited amount of classroom time, lack of updated teaching materials, mixed-ability classrooms, and unclear perspectives of the future application of the FL skills made the study urgent. Therefore, the teachers of ...

The article considers the role of further vocational training in general and the role of further language training in particular as a flexible tool of lifelong learning and continuous education. The key peculiarities of further language education courses are regarded. New foreign concepts of education and self-study (heutagogy) are paid attention to. The article analyses the roles of a teacher and a learner in terms of self-study organization. An individual learning path is viewed as an efficient form of self-study. Various definitions of this term are provided as well as the author's one. The pedagogical model with the use of individual learning path is presented. The model is based on the combination of invariable and variable modules through the employment of the individual learning path. Pedagogical support complex is an additional element of the model. It is designed to accompany and consult the learners. Awareness is seen as a key feature of self-study and its main characteristics are presented in accordance with psychological research. The notions of synchronous and asynchronous learning are presented and analysed in the framework of self-study. The hypothesis that an individual learning path results in the synergy of synchronous and asynchronous learning is proved by the experiment.

The authors set the aim to investigate whether these tasks can be used as tools to achieve multiple educational objectives, and which conditions can promote this end. Methodology: A combination of both qualitative and quantitative methods of action research was used in the study. The study embraced both non-language and language students with a wide range of foreign language levels, all future teachers of language and non-language subjects. The first part was based on the traditional PPP (“present, practice, produce”) model, the second part suggested the incorporation of multifunctional tasks into classroom activities. The qualitative and quantitative methods used in the study included a literature review and practi...
