Codex (original) (raw)

Description

Codex is the design system for Wikimedia. It includes documentation and guidelines, design tokens to store stylistic values, user interface components built in both JavaScript (Vue.js) and only with CSS, and a suite of icons. All of these are designed and built with wide-ranging support for internationalisation, global usage and web accessibility by default.

Not a fan of some of these new icons at all. They've become very genericised and are missing some of the heart that the old icons had. Esp. agree with the UserTalk and Robot new icons being a real downgrade.

I will work on an amendment to the puzzle icon in the next batch of quick follow up amendments. We explored some more simple versions of the puzzle icon which look more like a traditional basic puzzle piece. I'll revisit those.

Template (puzzle) — more detailed than other icons in the set, which reduces recognisability at small sizes.
The template (puzzle) icon mimics the WP25 logo, a nod to the brand. There were many versions of the puzzle trialed, some much more simple, but this one felt the most balanced with the rest of the icon set.

I've renamed draggable to draggableVertical in OOUI and marked the former as a deprecated alias (https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/c/oojs/ui/+/1301402). The same should be done in Codex (if it supports this).

Samwilson renamed T428854: CodexPHP: Support title attribute on Select widget's from Support title attrs on Select widget' to CodexPHP: Support title attribute on Select widget's

@jsn.sherman will throw together a user script to test this easily on one of the production environments.

Thanks @Esanders for the feedback on that. In our follow up amendments, let's redesign draggable to be more like what it was, a vertical drag, and consider adding draggableHorizontal and something like a draggableAround which would be the omnidirectional one. I will start working on these amendments next week, but I would like to wait to release any of them until we see any additional needs for other potential changes after the release next week.

The previous draggable implies that an item can only be dragged vertically, with arrows only on top and bottom. If that is the case in the place where this icon is used, I would suggest we create two new icons to be used in such cases instead—draggableVertical and draggableHorizontal.

@ekrem could you elaborate what is the test: with the --line-height-medium styling disabled via devtools trying to validate?

mb, it was supposed to demonstrate the situation «before the fix» (or «if the fix wasn't present»)

@ekrem could you elaborate what is the test: with the --line-height-medium styling disabled via devtools trying to validate?

Thanks @ekrem, we'll test and give feedback.
