David Hein @ Musical Lairs [May. 16th, 2009|07:46 pm]Philadelphia (PA) Folk Scene
David Hein performs at Musical Lairs on Saturday, May 30th.Lee Bowers, the host of the Musical Lairs house concert series writes:David's the best thing out of Toronto since Moxy Fruvous. In fact, he has a lot in common with Moxy Fruvous, besides being from Toronto. He is wickedly funny. He is sensitive. He is creative to a degree that should not be allowed in a 29 year old. He used to work as a writer for Jim Henson's Muppet Factory, Disney, and Sesame Workshop. He has a musical premiering this summer in the Toronto Fringe Festival: My Mother's Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding. It's a true story, and the songs will have you doubled over in hysterics. And then, he comes back with his sparrow in the subway song which is hauntingly beautiful. Hein's music and infectious live energy have earned him comparisons to Blue Rodeo, Bare-naked Ladies, Counting Crows, John Mayer and Dave Matthews. Hein's songs are urban, short stories about lost loves, lost travelers and lost time, but paired with open, optimistic promises of change. When: Saturday, May 30th. Doors open at 7:30. Music begins promptly at 8:00. Where: Lee Bowers' house in Villanova. Directions provided with reservation.Cost: A $20 contribution to the artist is suggested. Please also bring some finger food to share at the break.Reservations and more at the Musical Lairs website

Appel Farm 2009 Festival Cancelled [Mar. 31st, 2009|03:36 pm]Philadelphia (PA) Folk Scene
Appel Farm 2009 Festival CancelledCiting the troubled economy and a disappointing turnout last year, the arts center is putting the event on hiatus so it can plan its 50th anniversary festival for 2010.Not all is lost, however:Instead, the center will hold a benefit concert on June 7 to support its Rising Young Artist Scholarship Fund. The fund helps pay tuition for about 25 percent of the students who attend its summer camp.Nearly a dozen musicians are donating their time for the concert, said Timmons, including Livingston Taylor, John Gorka, Vance Gilbert, The Kennedys and Grey Eye Glances.Crossposted to phillyfolkscene, folkfans
