In Cahoots Villebon-sur-Yvette1998 (original) (raw)

In Cahoots – Villebon-sur-Yvette, MJC Boby Lapointe – 17 October 1998

This is one of two In Cahoots gigs in 1998 where fellow guitarist, and long-time Pip Pyle associate Patrice Meyer sat in with the band. The first was in Montreuil in March, which was a quartet gig, but for the second heard here, it’s back to the full sextet. The highlight for me comes at the end of this ( the second set) with a roaring version of “Your Root 2”, with Patrice playing a great solo in the walking bass section and not stopping until he’s outpowered by Fred’s mighty fuzz bass. In order to make room for the guest, Phil doesn’t solo quite as much as usual, but he is his usual brilliant passionate self on the particularly lengthy rendition of “ED Or Ian”. The other track featuring Patrice is Pete Lemer’s “Big Dick”, a recent addition to the InCa repertoire but already played by Patrice and Pip in their trio Tertio a few years prior. Another relatively new piece at the time was Fred’s feel-good bossa-tinged “Upside”, suitably played as encore. The opening “Above & Below” introduces Phil’s revised sax/trumpet arrangement of the opening theme (I believe this had never been played with Jim in the band prior to this tour), but the highlight is Pete’s extended solo, beginning on piano and continuing with an epic, fiery synth solo.
