In Cahoots Wuppertal 1986 – New Recording (original) (raw)
Discovered in Phil’s collection of cassette tapes: a near complete recording of In Cahoots at Kassiopeia in Wuppertal from 29 May 1986.
“Taken from a good quality cassette recording (with typical issues for a 3O+ year-old tape, but nothing too problematic), this was one of the last dates of In Cahoots’ long European tour of spring 1986, coming just days after the Radio Bremen broadcast that provided a good chunk of “Live 86-89”, and similarly begins with an excellent version of Above & Below which includes a fine synth solo by Pete Lemer (eliciting a scream of pleasure from an audience member), continues with the obligatory Second Sight, a fixture of the band’s sets throughout its existence. Then we have the ‘long’ version of “Truly Yours”, with extra sections (recorded as “Double Talk” by Phil with Dave Stewart on “Split Seconds”) bookending the familiar ballad – here delivered in a reflective, sensitive mood with a fine solo by Phil, again prompting spontaneous expressions of satisfaction from the same overly excited audience member.
Originally we only had those first three tracks, but the cassette containing the rest of the gig was eventually located in a different part of Phil’s collection. This other parts begins with the tail end of “A Simple Man” (another scream from the above-mentioned audience member helped ascertain this was indeed the same performance as the rest), so it seems we are missing at least the rest of the long Medley, but we have a complete “Green & Purple” and, better still, Alan Gowen’s “Reflexes In The Margin” played as encore.”
