Phil wrote Above & Below in 1981 and it appeared on the beautiful album Before A Word Is Said which was recorded between 23rd and 27th of April the front room of Alan Gowen’s flat in Tooting, South London, as Alan was too ill to make it to a recording studio. The lineup was Alan Gowen on keyboards, Phil on guitar, Richard Sinclair on bass and Trevor Tomkins on drums. Alan died from lukemia shortly afterwards on 17th May. Above & Below was first performed in public by National Health with Phil, Dave Stewart, John Greaves, and Pip Pyle with guests Elton Dean and Jimmy Hastings who reconvened briefly for two performances of Alan’s material plus new compositions from Phil (Above & Below) andJohn Greaves (Swelling Valley) as part of the Edinburgh Festival.
