Dreams Wide Awake is an early composition of Phil’s, written in the era of National Health and first performed, it is believed, on 7th June 1977 at Chiswick House, London, though the first documented performance was at Queen Elizabeth Hall six weeks later. The three page handwritten manuscript from the 1970’s, found among Phil’s effects after he died, is available here as a PDF. The beautiful photograph was given to me by the great photographer Laurie Lewis. It will be familiar to those who own the National Health CD Of Queues And Cures as it is reproduced as a silhouette in the CD booklet. I emailed a copy of it to Aymeric in February last year. Here is his reply: “Thanks for the photo. It being hi-res, I was able to zoom in on Pip’s newspaper. I found the issue of Psychic News he’s reading. See attached, it’s the issue date 5th August 1978. Yet I know, from Dave Stewart’s girlfriend’s diary, that the photo was taken on 4th August – the day before the newspaper came out ! So there REALLY was something supernatural involved ! Haha.”
