Phil said he was inspired to write Underdub after listening to Charlie Parker. It was first played by Hatfield & The North on the French tour they did right after recording it, in February 1975. It appears on track 8 of Hatfield’s record The Rotters Club where you can hear the great Jimmy Hastings on flute. National Health’s repetoire also occasionally included the piece, which was played at the Festival du Château , in Sierck-les-Bains,France in June 1977 and, with Jimmy Hastings guesting on both occasions, The Queen Elizabeth Hall, London in July, the Roundhouse, London for Camden Jazz week in November.
