The purpose of the present study is threefold: (a) it examines how Greek businesses perceive the ... more The purpose of the present study is threefold: (a) it examines how Greek businesses perceive the concept of sustainability, (b) it investigates the implementation of sustainable development practices in Greek businesses, and (c) it examines if there is a correlation between sustainable development practices adopted by businesses and the competitive advantage of businesses. Furthermore, reference is made to concepts like sustainability, the Triple Bottom Line (TBL), and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In addition, the TBL for sustainable business practices and the viability of measurement systems are examined. For this study, a survey was conducted using a questionnaire composed of five sections, which was addressed to Greek companies operating in various sectors. A total of 150 questionnaires were sent out and responses were received from 34 enterprises. Health and urban planning have long diverted their courses since their initial common evolution a... more Health and urban planning have long diverted their courses since their initial common evolution as a remedy for infectious diseases that spread out in Western European cities during the late 19th century. Today, this link is still missing, as urban planning seems to overlook health as a strategic parameter. In designing sustainable cities, attention has been shifted towards the environmental effects of urban planning, leaving behind the direct and indirect effects on human health and jeopardizing citizens’ quality of life. Despite global efforts (WHO, Urban Agenda), urban health continues to be examined in relation to illness research and health care provision in urban environments, while policy-making in cities refrains from engaging in urban health interventions through urban planning. During operation "Allied Force" in the spring of 1999, the burning or damaging of industrial and ... more During operation "Allied Force" in the spring of 1999, the burning or damaging of industrial and military targets in the Former Republic of Yugoslavia resulted in the release of a large number of chemicals into the atmosphere. The releases contained not only conventional air pollutants, but also Semi-Volatile Organic compounds (SVOs) which are known to be hazardous to health. Under suitable meteorological conditions, these chemicals can be transported across borders over large distances. In this paper, an analysis of measurements and dispersion calculations is presented which provides evidence of pollutant transport from the conflict area to Greece. The measuring program was carried out in Xanthi, Greece and included aerosol sampling and subsequent analysis for the determination of the concentration of SVOs including dioxins, furans, PCBs (Polychlorinated Biphenyls), PAHs (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) and organic phthalates. This paper focuses on two episodes of organic phthalates that were observed during the conflict period. Pollution measurements are interpreted by means of air trajectories and dispersion calculations. For this purpose, the HYSPLIT_4 (Hybrid Single Particle Langrangian Integrated Trajectory) modeling system is used to calculate the dispersion of toxic substances.
