Most recently the discourse on linear cities has been stirred up again relating to the controversial Neom project in Saudi Arabia. While abundant concepts and models of linear cities exist in literature, seemingly unrelated to one another, no real consensus has been established on a normative definition and the term is ambiguously used. Furthermore, some urban forms evolve naturally in a linear fashion without significant planning strategy raising the question of the concept’s validity. With previous notions in mind the crucial enigma resolved with this paper is what defines the concept, design and success of a Linear City? And why do linear city ideas reappear if they rarely get realized? This research elucidates the reasons behind the concept’s misinterpretation and provides a much-needed categorization of the general models, bringing to focus whether Neom is actually a liner city. Subsequently, it is explained how the planned concepts relate to organically evolved linear urban forms or current trends in sustainable urban development. The paper draws on desk-based research, and a comprehensive discourse analysis within the theoretical frameworks of urban morphology and critical theory. It builds upon the author’s prior research groundwork, provides theoretical review of existing primary sources and available body of knowledge encompassing a wide range of linear city models, ideas, concepts, and existing linear urban environments. The paper contributes to theory building by providing reasonable inferences and clarification on a contested topic.

In the absence of consistent urban planning strategy, with an instated legislation that is based on legalization of illegal construction, it is highly important to conduct evidence-based urban analyses of all affected areas to steer the course of development towards a sustainable urban trajectory. This research relies on Space Syntax analyses as a tool in elucidating the layout characteristics and spatial relations within selected study area of three settlements on the slopes of Sarajevo. A comparison is conducted between the Space Syntax analysis of existing conditions with the same analysis of planned conditions drafted in the official regulatory plans, to determine the level of change in terms of connectivity and urban integration. Central node areas within the layouts are identified with a 15-min distance walkability potential. The conducted spatial evaluation of selected area in this research provides basis for analyses of other settlements of the same character in and around Sarajevo. Furthermore, the level of urban intervention in the settlements can be determined and tailored to improve long-term sustainable urban development.

The study is particularly relevant due to the fact that the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and consequent safety measures amplified marginalization of people with disabilities. Bosnia and Herzegovina over the years failed to deliver on many basic principles signed in the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Although scientific stance in literature review is divided on the subject of disability simulation activities as education method, this paper argues in favor of experiential learning, provided that the activities are carefully conceptualized over an adequate time period and involve different stakeholders, including persons with disabilities. The study was conducted through three different frameworks: theoretical, practical and creative design process in collaboration between a higher-education institution, a clinical center, and a civic non-profit organization of people with disabilities. The workshop outcomes surpass documenting student attitudes towards the topic and provide site mapping for accessibility improvement interventions, creative design solutions in improving the quality of public space and public outreach activities.

The term refers to various compact architectural, infrastructural and transportation plans in linear form. With their daunting massive scale these concepts are often attributed to utopian attempts of pursuing an ideal city and therefore doomed to remain unrealized. This paper examines several models created throughout the course of history in terms of their emergence motivation, socioeconomic circumstances and relation to urban sustainability. Through the analysis, it is argued that linear megastructures are often unjustly rejected without acknowledgement of their underlying beneficial features in terms of mitigating challenges to sustainable urban development.

Analysing the case of one city we can discuss the directions that can be implemented in similar cases (comparing scale, geographical features, urban layout and history). Such an approach was the subject of the International Students Workshop that took place 10-14 November 2014. Sarajevo is a very good example of a city of rich cultural background, stages of successful development and high regional importance. Diversity of the urban layout is the result of development inconsistency due to the frequent shift in regimes [7]. The raises and falls of Sarajevo’s development manifest in city structure. They caused imbalance between potential on the one hand and existing standard on the other in some centrally located areas which is the case of Sarajevo’s current city center – Marijin Dvor. Therefore the workshop topics and afterwards the workshop design proposals relate directly to the mentioned area. The paper presents and points out Sarajevo center’s present urban and architectural potential and obstacles as well as proposes different solutions and approaches in order to improve the city standard. With previous in mind, the crucial question is how to improve collaboration among different interested parties, negotiate diverse interests, and secure transparent planning procedures leading to the outcome that will address many of the initially identified needs. To explore the collaborative mechanisms, we focus on the case of Lincoln Yards, a contemporary urban megaproject development in the central part of Chicago, United States. Using the overview of primary sources (legal and regulatory documents and newspapers articles) and semi-structured interviews with the relevant stakeholders, we elucidate the following: 1) the response of professional planners towards the developer's application, i.e., the intention to redevelop the area; 2) the approach applied and values promoted by developers; 3) the strategies used by the local community to protect the local identity and local needs; and 4) the relationship of public officials (aldermen) towards both the local public and investors. Finally, the case provides insights into the lessons learned relevant for the spatial challenges posed by urban megaproject development

With an increasing urbanization and expected growth of cities, among other demands on the city infrastructure and resources to meet human needs, managing and creating new public spaces presents an additional challenge to sustainable urban development. The need for quality open places that provide safety, accessibility, green areas and services has been especially emphasized during the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic. New global urban development goals responding to contemporary lifestyle, health, business and recreational habits shift towards the 15-min walkability in cities. The general aim is to provide all citizens with access to public open areas and recreation in a walking distance. The main purpose of this paper is to elucidate hidden potentials and possibilities of large and small urban areas to meet these challenges and to demonstrate how redesigning, rethinking, exploring new meanings and converting existing city spaces can lead to new quality open places. Based on a case study of one of the highest-density cities in the world, this paper is explaining applied legal frameworks, management, contribution of the private sector and communities in the process of redesigning the city space of New York. The paper reflects on the important contribution of quality open public space in designing sustainable and livable cities, but as well as contribution to the economic, social and environmental benefit for the communities. The emergence of high-rise development without proper long-term planning strategies largely contributes to smog retention as a recent study on ventilation corridors in the city has shown (EBRD, 2019). As in many Southeast European cities over the last few decades, Sarajevo is dealing with an urban sprawl generated by the development of informal settlements (Tsenkova, 2012). These represent the dominant developments on surrounding hillsides around the city, accessible mainly by vehicle transportation, creating an aggravating factor on infrastructure, air quality and future development. Current practice in mitigating these challenges are scarce and often obstructed by adverse political agendas. The border of two uncooperative and structurally different governing Entities stretches alongside the city and hinders a unified long term regulation plan. The main research approach of this paper is based on grounded theory and case studies of cities with similar elevation variations. The paper establishes two main challenges to a sustainable urban development for a valley-based city in air quality and transportation. It elucidates sustainable urban planning opportunities in an oil-depleted future of Sarajevo while dealing with the given circumstances of urban disengagement and infrastructural pressure of the peripheral hillside developments and the urgent vertical growth restrictions in the valley, by providing conceptual solutions for urban integration of the largely informal settlements through cable propelled modes of transportation and heat source re-evaluation.

Despite having the highest country unemployment rate in Europe of 43, 5% (Trading Economics, 2014), frequent public demonstrations and an overall social dissatisfaction, there is a noticeable increase in construction of retail centers. Since 2009 three major shopping malls, around 116.500 m2 in total, have been constructed in the city center apart from numerous more previously built along the city. Given the mentioned conditions one would assume that there can be only a small percentage of possible users for these spaces. Interestingly the shopping centers are never empty. The present study aims to contribute to research to what differentiates these inner city hedonic temples of consumption from other shopping malls and analyze if socioeconomic standards affect and/or alter usage and behavior in them. The hypothesis is that such modern structures having a high consumption lifestyle appearance, thus stimulating the pursuit for one, provide a sense of global equality and an ostensible stability to Sarajevo citizens. Apart from detailed review of existing literature, valuable information were collected through an online questionnaire targeting exclusively citizens of Sarajevo. In conclusion, the results answer to whether and how construction of consumption architecture meets the interests and needs of citizens living in a socioeconomically unstable country.

However, it is fair to state that the linear city concept in contemporary planning theory and literature has often been subjected to omission. This thesis provides an exceptional perspective on the matter by broadening the scope of evaluation while elucidating possible emergence-inducing and essential commonalities of precedent concepts. Moreover, the research subject expands onto a correlation between theoretical and physical setting through a case study on the naturally elongated urban form of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The methodology applied is within scope of qualitative research encompassing elaborative theoretical study and case evaluation from a revisionist approach on current planning policy and documentation. The established hypothesis claims that there is significant value in a general conception of linear urban development adhering to contemporary sustainable development principles, and therefore should be investigated when it comes to planning decisions in existing linear urban areas. A unique categorization of linear urban concepts is established, as well as a design strategy proposal derived from the rationale and inferences of the general conception and recognized peculiarities of Sarajevo's urban setting. Lastly, based on the strategy and previously identified design principles of linear city concept, a proposal of spatial interventions is offered.

Yet, naturally conditioned elongated urban developments have not been a frequent subject of research. However, dynamic urbanization under ongoing processes of globalization have brought new conditions and challenges for cities, among them a strong impact of international financial markets on a city space. Cultural and recreational areas are being systematically replaced by commercial and office buildings what disrupts correct city structure. The set of conditions mentioned above relate to linear cities as well. Apart from analyzing possible causes of developing existing linear cities, this paper aims to examine their contemporary development possibilities determined by mentioned above factors. Sarajevo, BiH serves as case example. On the basic of extensive literature review the development possibilities have been recognized. In case of Sarajevo possible interventions appear as strengthening main transportation axes and establishing new centers along the city spine .
