A value-added service is defined as a functionality of an adaptive and multi-channel information system obtained by composing services offered by different providers. The framework has been developed as part of the MAIS project. The MAIS framework focuses on the following phases of service life cycle: requirements analysis, design, deployment, run time use and negotiation. In the first phase, the designer elicits, validates and negotiates service requirements according to social and business goals. The design phase is in charge of modelling services with an enhanced version of UML, augmented with new features developed within the MAIS project. The deployment phase considers the network infrastructure and, in particular, provides an approach to implement and coordinate the execution of services from different providers. In the run time use and negotiation phase, the MAIS methodology provides support to the optimal selection and quality renegotiation of services and to the dynamic evaluation of management costs. The paper describes the MAIS methodological tools available for different phases of service life cycle and discusses the main guidelines driving the implementation of a service management architecture, called reflective architecture, that complies with the MAIS methodological approach.

Nowadays, we are assisting to the proliferation of standardized approaches to describe such services, but there is the general agreement of distinguishing between the general characteristics of services and the characteristics associated with service invocation. In many cases, the selection of services is static and based on matching techniques to retrieve the most appropriate ...

As a consequence, traditional information systems evolve to multichannel systems in which services are provided through different channels, being a channel the abstraction of a device and a network. This work proposes a quality model suitable for capturing and reasoning about quality aspects of multichannel information systems.

The DTS dynamics can be modeled as a Markov process. The problem of formulating the set of linear homogeneous equations is considered, obtaining the related coefficient matrix, that is, the transition rate matrices of the DTS elements. Such operations can be performed according to the rules of Kronecker algebra. The transition rate matrices are used to calculate the probabilities of the different possible states of the DTS. The

Processes can be composed using Web services, but their orchestration has to also consider users needs at runtime, where these needs are expressed as context information. Context information is formed by functional and non functional characteristics and Web services must be selected also considering non functional aspects. In this scenario, new approaches and new frameworks have to be studied in order to overcome the limitations of the current standards, such as WSDL and WS-BPEL, which only consider functional aspects of Web services. This paper presents the MAIS framework, which is able to execute a context aware orchestration of processes composed of Web services. With this framework, users can execute processes that adapt their behavior to users context.

While most applications need to store time-varying data, there are no widely used commercial temporal databases. A primary reason for the absence of technology transfer from research to practice is the lack of a commonly accepted consensus data model or query language upon which to base research and development. Even the terminology is inconsistent.
