These world's fairs have rarely been the subject of studies that have measured their impact in terms of their long-term effects against the background of territorial modernization, observed in a broader framework of planning strategies. The prevailing view in research devoted to the phenomenon reconstructs the physical premises of the fairs, which are closely related to preparation for the events as spectacular, but spatially and temporally enclosed, "machines". Within this perspective, research that aims to delineate a comprehensive reading--both synchronic and diachronic--of these spectacular events has been even more rare until r...

The high amount of hybridizations provoked by such a transfer in almost every sphere of life, from language to food and music, is likewise well known. Architecture offers an effective perspective on this kind of relationship. Indeed, since the end of the nineteenth century Italian architects found great opportunities on the banks of the Rio de la Plata, making a recognisable contribution to the shaping of Argentine cities. The paper observes the Argentine experiences of a number of Italian designers between 1948 and 1958, a decade in which the post-war wave of architectural migration started and developed. Those were also the years in which Argentine architecture, after CIAM 6 (Bridgwater 1947) started to attract the attention of international observers. At the same time, Italian culture was engaged in redefining itself, overlapping new issues and values on the die inherite...

This viewpoint, influenced by Banham’s writings, merits discussion in order to consider the great variety of elements that fuelled megastructure visions. In fact, at the same time as large-scale design came to the forefront as a reflection of industrial and economic growth, this culture was also at the centre of a dense network of dialogue which architecture established with structural engineering on the one hand and with visual arts on the other, consistent with a concise and continuous conception of design cultures. The results of these relationships go back very clearly to the middle of the 1950s, but in some cases they had already been active in the 1920s and 1930s and, to an extent and with an intensity of that in some ways is surprising, also during the war and in the first post-war years.

Since then, a multitude of studies have contributed to enriching the historiography of the Cold War, engaging new fields and addressing the topic through a plurality of disciplinary perspectives.
