Mies van der Rohe. The architecture of the city. Theory and Architecture, 2023
If progress in architecture consists in posing new questions one of the main aspects of the work ... more If progress in architecture consists in posing new questions one of the main aspects of the work of Mies has been in fact to put in crisis and to be measured with the historic architecture and his elements. By this point of view, he was a forerunner that paved the way and offered inspirational perspectives able to trigger wide experimentation for the generations of architects to come. In this paper the analysis will be concentrated on the theme of the corner of a certain number of architectures. The aim is not to highlight the way that different architects had approached different projects in different ages and places by working on the same theme: the corner of the building. The approach adopted in this analysis starts from a structuralistic point of view of modern architecture, but in the wider sense of the term, and from the abstract and relative aspect of the modern architecture and culture. By this perspective the building is studied as a combination of architectural parts or elements held together by a general constructive idea.

But the two projects for sanatorium Sotiria in Athens and Sanatorium of Tripoli, in Peloponnese, owe much to the Paimio of Alvar Aalto. He finds in the architecture of Paimio not only new formal solutions for the sanatorium typology but mainly a non dogmatic modernism and an architectural organism close to the psychological needs of the patients.
The aim of this study is therefore to investigate how Despotopoulos drew these new buildings and how he inserted them in the Greek landscape through a parallel analysis and a comparison of these projects with the architecture of Paimio.
What make these buildings still important is their historical value and the fact they constitute the testimony of some principles and of a design method that had been spread outside Finland and had adapted to a series of different conditions.

The purpose of this paper is therefore twofold: on the one hand, to examine the progressive aspect of the historical architecture, as Rossi puts it through his writings and work; on the other hand, the intention is to analyse how Rossi’s projects had been a source of inspiration for a number of Greek architects who worked in the Greek city, under the same criteria, and thus, being able to compare themselves to its heritage.

It has been developed during the last year (course of: “Elements of Architectural typology”, prof. Michele Caja, coll: Carlo Biraghi and Sotirios Zaroulas). The theoretical elaborations by Aldo Rossi constitute the basic reference to this analysis. Moreover, some recent experiences are also considered, such as the research carried out by Steven Holl “The alphabetical city”. So, in addition to the four types of urban blocks that Aldo Rossi suggests – a block of houses surrounded by open space, a block of houses connected to each other and facing the street, a deep block of houses, and the houses with closed courts – it is suggested here some sub-categories of houses, such as the "L", the "H" house, or the "T" house, etc. In addition to a greater knowledge of the city of Milan, this operation has contributed significantly to the construction of the architectura...

In addition to a greater knowledge of the city of Milan, this operation has contributed significantly to the elaboration of the architectural project. In fact, the analysis offers the occasion for a greater familiarity with the terms of typo-morphological analysis and with the concept of block, which constitutes the minimum urban portion, and for this reason the basis for a study on the relationship between the city and its architecture.

Μολονότι οι δύο συγγραφείς αγνοούν ο ένας την ύπαρξη του άλλου και η ανάπτυξη των δύο βιβλίων γίνεται µε διαφορετική µέθοδο, φαίνεται να συγκλίνουν κυρίως σε ένα γενικότερα αποδεκτό συµπέρασµα για την εποχή εκείνη: και οι δύο αρνούνται την ισοπέδωση των αρχών του Μοντέρνου Κινήµατος και την επικράτηση του λεγόµενου ∆ιεθνούς Στυλ και προσπαθούν για την επανένταξη της ιστορικής αρχιτεκτονικής και των κανόνων που τη διέπουν στο πρόγραµµα της µοντέρνας αρχιτεκτονικής, µε σκοπό την ενίσχυση της τελευταίας. Οι λέξεις δοµή, συγκρότηση, κατασκευή, αποκτούν µια γενικότερη σηµασία και αναφέρονται σε έννοιες όπως το σύστηµα και η οργάνωση, µε εφαρµογή τόσο στην ευρύτερη κλίµακα της πόλης όσο και στη µικρότερη κλίµακα του σχεδίου ενός κτιρίου. Η συγκεκριµένη µελέτη αποσκοπεί στη διερεύνηση της σχέσης του µοντερνισµού της δεκαετίας του ΄30 µε εκείνον του ΄60, και του πως εκφράζεται η ιδέα της δοµής της αρχιτεκτονικής και της έκφρασή της µέσα από το έργο των δύο αρχιτεκτόνων: ποιά η σχέση του κτιρίου µε τα στοιχεία του ως αναγνωρίσιµα µέρη και ποιές είναι οι οµοιότητες στη θεώρηση της δοµής της πόλης µε εκείνη της αρχιτεκτονικής;

The project was about the realization of a complex of public buildings, including a theatre, a library and a dance hall, for this small city in the middle of the Scandinavian country.
The theme of the cultural centre is not new for Despotopoulos; it represents the outcome of a series of projects and his unceasing research on the theme of public space and public buildings related to a cultural function, he elaborated in Greece and in Sweden since the thirties onwards, and their important role for the existence of the meaning of the city. The cultural centre in this way obtains a character similar to that of the ancient agorà, which contributed as catalytic factor to the creation of the Greek pólis and became the decisive element able to transform a settlement into a city.
The aim of this study is therefore to investigate how Despotopoulos drew this project and how he inserted it in the Swedish city taking into account both the local architecture and the idea of Greek agorà. The questions that raise are: how could the space and the public buildings of agorà be influential factors for the definition of the elements of the city? How the project dialogues with the architecture of ancient agorà with Swedish architecture and the tradition of Swedish cultural centres?

By this point of view, he was a forerunner that paved the way and offered inspirational perspectives, which have been able to trigger wide experimentation for the generations of architects to come. The solutions, for example, Mies' projects offered for the corner of the IIT Navy Building and for the lesser-known rear loggia piers in the project of Mosler house, represent his effort to master the solution Schinkel elaborated for the corners of Altes Museum and to redraw it in progressive terms and for the present city. This paper concerns the analysis of the theme of the corner solution, as it was elaborated by several architects (Behrens, Perret, Grassi). In this way, the aim is to draw attention to how the same theme has brought to different solutions, to a progressive consideration of the architectural elements and their relationship with the history and architecture of each city.
