One of the breakthroughs in information and communication technology (ICT) in the 21st century is... more One of the breakthroughs in information and communication technology (ICT) in the 21st century is the emergence of the social media network which has facilitated the creation of different platforms for social interaction. The potentials of the social media are seamless and boundless in terms of interaction, interrelationships, information sharing and exchange. The only limitation to the utilization of the potentials of these platforms is naivety in terms of usage and the possible problem of addiction. This paper aimed to analyze social media addiction among Nigerian students and to proffer possible solutions. Oral interview using structured questions, observation of students behavior within the school were used for data collection. Findings revealed that up to 78% of the student population interviewed and monitored spent from 3 to 5 hours of their active study time on social media, which affected their academic performances within the period reviewed. The ones in the remaining 22% that do not spend much of their time in the social media were as a result of their inability to own a smartphones. This paper has recommended, therefore, that students should reduce the amount of time spent on the social media network by engaging themselves on innovative endeavors, while lecturers are encouraged to give students more assignments that will keep them engaged more often. Furthermore, application developers develop innovative social media apps that will present more vocational contents that would contribute to meeting the needs of sustainable development in Africa.
