The Port of Tortuga (original) (raw)

Away to the Church! [11 Feb 2008|11:47pm]
As Geoffrey's troupe headed off in one direction with their charged intent, Rahkus turned to what he was now thinking of as his group. He, of course, would relinquish leadership should a better leader make themself known. At this point, however, he was the only male member of the crew present, so, to his mind, he was the most qualified to lead.In his group, there were a trio of women -- the quiet one with the knives, the even quieter Tinker woman, and the one currently dressed as a man -- and the ruffled dandy wanting adventure. As he looked them over, they were very much the motley crew. He himself was overly unusual and colorful; sure to be noticed. The dandy was, almost by definition, going to attract attention. The quiet woman, Kira he thought, could likely slip by without much problem. Rahkus was unaware of her part in the day's earlier escape from the gaol. The Tinker woman he didn't know by name, but was fairly sure she had been on the ship. This concept confused and interested him, given what little he knew or had heard of Tinkers and he made a mental note to ask her about it should he get the opportunity. The woman dressed as a man made a convincing weathered young sailor, so the little pirate was apt to have confidence in her... her ability to pass down streets would increase as they got closer to the docks. And the dandy... stood out anywhere. That was the unfortunate point of dandies."Well then, mates, et seems w'ave th'difficult job a gettin' cross town wit'out summonin' oop attention." He looked them over, sure he had their attention. "Anyone got an idea wot kin make tha' easier t'do?"((If this goes too long unanswered -- like, a day or so -- I will continue on as though the characters did not answer, save of course, upon justifiable reason(s) against it. My general thinking in taking this course of action is (A) most of the players of the characters involved have been or are AWOL for a long time now, and (B) it would do to get this part of the group roughly parallel with the action of the other group.))

At the Blacksmiths. [07 Feb 2008|04:34pm]
Dabria followed Geoffrey back through the forest, bringing up the rear of their small group. They were considerably less noticeable now, which bode well for them, and they barely drew any looks as they emerged from the wooded area and made their way back through the town. It took everything in her to keep calm and walk slowly and unobtrusively through the streets. Though they were not crowded, they were far from empty and her over active imagination was conuring up officers and guards, hiding everywhere. But she kept her eyes down, following Geoffrey's lead, ignoring her blood hammering through her veins. Things were about to get a lot more intense than this, and if she couldn't keep her cool walking through a street, what chance did she have in the highly protected fort? She had years of practice blending into the background when she needed to, and though she hadn't had to do it in some time, she hadn't forgotten everything that life had taught her up until this moment. She wasn't an idiot, after all. She looked up in time to see Geoffrey slip into a shop, just before a small alleyway with a blacksmiths sign hanging over the door. This must be the place then. She slipped in after the others, her eyes taking in the swords hanging around the walls. She jumped suddenly, but managed to keep her startled surprise silent as she heard a loud snore from the back of the shop. She glanced to Geoffrey to see how he would handle this.

A Predicament at Fort Charles [05 Feb 2008|08:23am]
Commodore Rothwell was wide awake. Unfortunately, he was likely to remain so for some time as he wasn't going to be able to return to his quarters in the Comet to sleep and he had the worst kind of insomnia on land. He'd guessed long ago that it was the lack of the ocean's rocking, but the fact of the matter was, the longer he had to quarter on shore the more worn out he'd become. He was used to putting up with it but on some nights he had to admit that he wasn't getting any younger, and he wouldn't be able to recover as quickly from it as time progressed. At any rate, it wasn't too late yet and he was expecting to meet with Vice Admiral Vernon, who had returned from his Jamaican 'tour' that morning. The paperwork had been done, but now there would be a discussions upon the reports and...He had a very important matter he wanted to bring up to Vernon that he wasn't sure the reports could convey. So he waited in his small quarters at Fort Charles, properly dressed with powdered wig and whitened lapels on his dress frock, for him to be summoned to Vernon's office. Then there was the other matter, the most recent. He'd seen an East Indiaman merchant ship pull into the harbor earlier that day. Seeing as this was the West Indies, and well outside their range of trade, he had an unsettled feeling about its oddity. Surely Vernon would know why it was here. For now, he tried to keep his thoughts focused upon the events that had taken place, and the discussion at hand.((More to come on this post, wanted to break it up and just get my feet wet after the long hiatus :D ))

Domesday. [07 Jan 2008|09:15pm]
Will had finally recovered from his sleep deprivation enough to awaken by afternoon. Once his eyes opened, he was instantly alert, remembering what had happened mere hours before; he was gripped with a need to make certain his wife was still all right, and... his son. When he was let in to Elizabeth's room, the place had been carefully remade and freshened, and she had been dressed in a sleeping gown and housecoat so she could speak to visitors if she wished. Only now, she was asleep, pale and exhausted against a corona of chestnut hair strewn over the linen pillow. She was even now so beautiful that his mind simply stopped for a time he couldn't guess.A small sigh redirected his attention to his son, little William. Billy. The infant's eyelids blinked heavily, shielding tiny eyes from the unaccustomed daylight seeping into the room through the curtains. He lay in a little cradle, a tiny fist waving weakly. That overwhelming feeling assaulted him again, the complete need to protect this little one and raise him up safe and right. It was, he realized, the most powerful thing he'd ever felt in his life, even eclipsing the emotions he felt for his own wife and that was saying something extreme indeed. An hour later, as the sun began to work toward the horizon, Elizabeth awakened into the still room disturbed only by the soft ticking of a clock and the creak of the rocking chair Will sat in, with Billy asleep in his arms.He looked up at her as she made a soft noise of awakening, and smiled, but his expression was resolute and intense."I have decided," he said, as if those words carried all the meaning she, or anyone, would ever need to hear.

What the Forest Taught Me [06 Jan 2008|08:06pm]
Norrington nodded almost imperceptibly at Rahkus' admonishment, but he wasn't about to stop to address what he felt was an overreaction on Rahkus' part to begin with. He managed to lead this rag-tag group through the town and up around the hill, approaching the Governer's mansion almost from behind. He did not stop nor slow his pace but nonetheless spared a moment's glance at the light in the windows of the building, knowing that behind them Elizabeth and her husband were with their newborn son and the child's happy grandfather. Big happy harmonious family. Something that Norrington himself had never really experienced, even in his childhood. He pulled his eyes and his mind away from the warm home and headed down a narrow, somewhat overgrown path behind the garden wall that led a few yards into a densely wooded area. He stopped when they reached a small clearing and plopped down unceremoniously on a fallen tree trunk, stretching his long legs out in front of him, speaking not a word to his compatriots. He had given the women instructions to follow after a few minutes and prayed silently that they would arrive safely and hopefully soon.

[06 Jan 2008|04:58pm]
Thomas swung himself down from the rigging, rubbing his hand across his sun burnt forehead and pushing his grey hair out of his face. The sun was setting on a day that had been both productive and laborious, the ship that he and Leeny had joined now ready to set sail with the morning tide. Last minute repairs had had to be carried out on the sails, and below deck, and so every hand had been kept busy. Now, though, the Captain had given them leave to go ashore, so long as they were back before the sunrise. If they were not, the ship would leave without them, simple as that, but as most of the sailors had their belongings already aboard, Thomas doubted that many would jump ship at this point. He was looking forward to a decent pint of ale before they set sail for who knew how many months on the sea. He went below decks, grabbed his jerkin and hat, along with his coin purse and headed for the shore. He looked around his absently for the lass he had come aboard with, not having seen her for the better part of the day. He was unsure as to whether she would come ashore with a bunch of men who would more than likely end up in a whorehouse at the end of the night, though he would not. He looked out for her all the same as he made his way down the gangplank.[Tag for Leeny]

Following Brett's post, we're going to aim to start back properly on Monday. We need to know if you're around, if you're interested in posting and if you still want all the characters that you have. And by 'interested' and 'around', I mean posting at least once a week, and possibly more often, if you are included in an important thread (such as the breaking-out-of-the-fort thread, which I am determined we shall get around to SOON.)So please, post here and let me know what you're going to be doing with your characters. Thanks.

OOC - WTF, Mate? [02 Jan 2008|09:48pm]
I keep checking back to see if it's time for me to post my part of the story... and not only has nothing happened for nearly two months, but I haven't been seeing key people on AIM. I've fired off a few messages and waited...I'm REALLY not the sort of person to do this, generally, but I think I have to step up and call for a show of hands. If I don't hear back from any mods about a serious intent to continue, then I'll offer to take over direction of the community and do any recasting of necessary characters so the tale can be told.I'm going nowhere as of yet, but I do understand that writers come and go and many of you have been here a long time, but may also be ready to move on. That's fine, there's no judgment being made against you whatsoever. But let's pick up and move on, one way or another, within a week.

let's get this shit rolling, eh? [04 Nov 2007|04:24pm]
Norrington made his way across town as quickly as he could, but things were a bit difficult. The citizens of Port Royal were rather in a tizzy over a breakout from the city gaol, which was rumored to included a pack of female pirates. For once, Norrington hoped and prayed the rumors were true. If some of the Pearl's crew had already escaped, that would make his job... well not easy, exactly, but perhaps slightly less of a suicide mission. He reached his destination, finally, and pushed his way through the pub.To his utmost surprise, there sat at one end of the pub not only Rahkus but several members of the crew. He paused a few steps into the doorway, unsure of whether or not to proceed. He was not worried about Rahkus but there was no telling how the rest of the crew would respond to his appearance; he did not know what their general belief about his loyalties was. It was quite possible they'd pegged him for a turncoat. It wouldn't change anything by avoiding them though. He swallowed thickly and proceeded toward them as calmly as he could muster, stopping a couple feet from the table they were gathered about.

Hugh's Re-Introduction [01 Oct 2007|12:14am]
The wind, the sun, and the spray of sea in his face, all of these things should have given him a pleasant mood. Yet, as Hugh Morrow leaned up against the railing of the ship he couldn't help but feel anxious and... unsatisfied. Here he was in good health along with steady employment. Except for having a ship to call his very own, Hugh thought this was all he would ever need, but he couldn't help feeling as if something was missing, as if there was something beyond the horizon that was just out of reach.Hugh was only six months removed from the Pearl and her madness, yet the time had seemed to stretch on like years. His life took a dramatic turn, now he engaged in an honest man's living aboard a trading ship that circled colonial islands. For a moment Hugh felt like spitting. Sure it was a steady income and the easy way to avoid the gallows, but it was so dull. He longed for a real brawl, swords crashing, the smell of blood and sweat, the rush of two (or more) men clawing desperately at the right to breathe. Though he had bitterly cursed those months he spent in the company of Jack Sparrow and his crew, silently he conceded that they were likely the best damned months of his life. You're a changed man, Mr. Morrow. He had to tell himself. Hell, he even bathed regularly, wore mostly clean clothes, and had managed to tame his mangy blond hair into one neat queue. That life was behind him, piracy, old John Ward, the Pearl, and especially her. He shook his head fiercely, sending droplets of salt water from his floppy black hat. For God's sake man, stop thinking! “Mr. Morrow.” The Captain's approach was so quiet Hugh nearly jumped in surprise. Instantly the former pirate knew something was amiss. The way the Captain looked out to sea or studied his hands rather than looking his sailor in the eye; the way he braced himself against the railing and inhaled so deep Hugh knew the exhale would be unpleasant at best. “Mr. Morrow, you're a fine a sailor as I've ever had the pleasure.” “Thank ye, sir.” Hugh responded, matching the man's quiet tone. He could guess at what was coming. “With things the way they are,” the older man looked towards the growing lights of Port Royal as if searching for a kind way to put the quickening extinction of piracy in the Spanish Main. “I'm afraid--” “I un'erstan', Cap'n.” Hugh nodded his head and followed the gaze towards the port. He couldn't ask this man to face the gallows on his behalf; the Navy was hanging folks who even spoke to those thought to be pirates. The whole mess was causing suspicion and dissension among crews across the sea. However in this case, the Captain was right. “I'll take me leave 'ere.” The Captain extended his hand and they shook like honest men. Hugh felt a small pang in his heart then, as if for a brief second he wished he didn't have to constantly look over his shoulder waiting for the noose to fall.~ * ~ Without looking back at the ship and men he was leaving behind, Hugh walked down the docks of the bustling port town. He supposed it was lucky that it was late in the day and most of the daily activities had died down. Being in Port Royal made him damned nervous and he could almost smell foul death lingering from the hangman's noose. He tried not to think of how many mates he had lost to patriots over the years. Right now though, he needed a drink. Perhaps there was one watering hole left in this town that a lonely sailor could find some refuge.

Getting things rolling again... [29 Sep 2007|09:09am]
A doctor had arrived and rushed upstairs and Norrington all but ran after him. He knew he had no place here, though, no matter what Elizabeth may have said. The goodwill gesture of making him the child's godfather was not lost on him but he was under no illusions about being part of Elizabeth's real family either.A lifetime later, the midwife reappeared to inform the household that Elizabeth would live as would her (and Will Turner's, he reminded himself) newborn son.He didn't want to leave he knew he must, and soon. As usual, he had other duties to attend. That, at least, had not changed much since being tossed out of the Navy. The crew of the Black Pearl had no doubt been transferred to the fort's prison within minutes of docking and if he knew Jack Sparrow and his ilk, they were probably half out of their minds by now.He excused himself quietly, shook Weatherby Swann's hand and ignored the pointed look he received from the older man.The air outside was moist and relatively cool still. It clung to his skin like slime but would no doubt heat up soon; the sun was just climbing over the horizon and the whole of the Caribbean would be baking as usual within an hour or so. He headed off toward the other end of town where he knew of a few taverns that served a more colorful crowd and prayed that Rahkus would be among its clients. Port Royal was not London but it wasn't a tiny hamlet either and a small pirate like Rahkus could prove hard to find if he chose to make himself scarce...

Mod Plot Post [17 Sep 2007|07:20pm]
Right. We're starting back. I was going to ask you all to post plot contributions and we would put it all together, but you know what? That would take too long. So what I'm going to do it post a plot line and if you want to add anything or if you disagree then you can post and let me know and we can modify it a little. So here is how things stand. Elizabeth had just had her baby, things looked shaky for a while, but she and the baby are ok. For those of you interested, her child is called William James and Norry is the godfather. Will, Norrington and Governor Swann are both at the mansion with her.Jack, Bootstrap and most of the crew are in the Fort gaol, all locked up. You should know if your character is there or not. Guy is also there, in a seperate cell with Bloodrose and Anamaria, and all three of them are in chains, unlike the rest of the crew. The rest of the crew (Dabria, Sam, Robin, Lidia and Moncello) have escaped with the help of Kira and are now in a tavern across town, hiding out. Thaddeus and Rakhus are also around, and should make their way to the bar. We could start by saying that they are there already. Here is what we are going to do. Break the crew out of the gaol. Norrington is going to spearhead this, he is going to leave the Governors mansion now that he knows Elizabeth is safe. There are only a few pirate friendly bars in Port Royal (or that is how things are for our game anyway) so it wouldn't take Norrington long to locate the others. However Sam wants to work the breakout is fine with me, so long as it is done quickly.Gaol folk, do not just sit there and wait to be rescued. Your characters can still have a lot of interaction with each other, even if they aren't going anywhere. Jump into the RP as soon as you can. There was talk of doing something with Jack, Bill, Will and Liz, something to do with a life debt being owed to Bill by Jack and will now come to pass. We'll discuss this soon.Leeny and Thomas are currently on board a merchant ship bound for africa, taking out valuables to trade for slaves. They haven't left port yet, but will do so the same day as the Pearl. This is going to be the ship that Jack and co. attack and plunder in order to kit out the Pearl, as she won't have much on board at all. Thomas and Leeny will then opt to join the Pearls crew. Beckett is going to be around VERY SOON. As in, the day after the breakout. He is going to be the reason that Will and Liz have to leave, and without their son. Swann will presumably look after the little boy until they return. Beckett wants them dead. I think Brett was going to play him, no?So that is where we stand. If you have questions/comments, please let me know. Oh, and just to be sure, I want you ALL to reply to this post so that I know you are here. We will start when each of these characters are accounted for:JackNorringtonBootstrap (poss NPC)ElizabethWillSwannPintelRagettiAnamariaDabriaBloodroseHarryRobinAidanSamKiraLidiaRakhusThaddeusMoncelloBaileyLeenyThomasAnd, of course, Rothwell.I myself can account for Dabria, Guy, Elizabeth, Thomas and Bailey. The wine merchant Le Fleur [10 Jul 2007|02:04am]
Le Fleur was docked right where the Frenchman had indicated. Before she thought of hailing any of the nearby sailors, she knew it was the right ship. The dock around it was bustling with activity: men unloading casks from a wagon, the workhorses standing docilely despite the noise; men rolling casks up the gangplank; men readying the ship. Casks (and the smell was strong even from a good 50 yards away) of rum. The French drunkard in the pub who'd told her about the ship had been right, after all."Tom," she said, feeling slightly awkward and too familiar calling the older man by his first name, "I think we've found the ship."As she continued to observe it, she noticed an ornery billy goat and six nannies tied to a post near the edge of the dock. Two young kids bleated near their cream-colored mothers. The goats were small but hardy-looking - about the size of medium-sized dogs. Despite his short stature and the equally short length of the rope tying him to the post, the billy goat was successfully fending off three sailors. The poor buggers were trying to take away the kids and untie one of the nannies; Leeny couldn't suppress a laugh as the billy goat butted one sailor in the stomach. The man landed hard on his arse."Tha's i', I've had i' wi' tha' bloody animal," he hollered, hurt more in pride than body. He picked up a forgotten belaying pin on the dock and leapt to his feet. As the sailor advanced toward the provoked beast, Leeny felt her indignation rise. Her instinct as a farmer overrode her assumed identity of sailor. "Ye, sir, will put down that pin," she declared authoritatively, striding forward - momentarily forgetting both Tom and the fact that she was dressed as a lad.

After several minutes of stoney silence from the little red pirate, perhaps linked to his stature, parentage, or some tragedy from his childhood, Thaddeys decided to move on towards the fortress. He hiked up the trail and approached the main gate. He looked the part of a ship's doctor and looked at these people as if They were bothering Him, "I heard the alarm bells from the town. I am doctor Paine, serving on the Comet under the Commodore. I've come to see if there is any need to my medical expertise."((Some one feel free to play the guards))

Or are we jus' supposed t'wait fer the hangmans noose, calm as ye like?"His comments were echoed by other crew members, some sitting and some standing around the cell."Yeah","What's the plan?","'ow we gettin' out?""You're the Captain"_Jack whipped around to face his crew, a smile on his face which was quite obviously for appearance only, and was in no way genuine."Gentlemen," he offered calmly, "I can assure you that any efforts to escape are most undoubtedly and much obligingly being made. Obviously, there's little can be done from our "vantage point", so...clearly, whatever fuss is being made outside is part of the greater scheme in which we shall, most triumphantly, make our escape. Savvy?"He had no idea if any of this was true, but he figured he had little to lose by bluffing.

Bailey stood up, getting restless in the cell. The sun had left the sky and the prison was now plunged into darkness, lit only by the two torches attached to the stone wall opposite their cells. He hung on the bars, shouting out to the guards he presumed we standing outside their cell. "Oi! When are we gonna get some food in 'ere?" he wasn't particularly hungry, but he was bored beyond belief and he wanted something, anything to happen. When he received no response, he swore and turned back to the others in the cell. They had been split into two cells, not counting the cell holding Ana Maria, Bloodrose and that scum from the Adia. Their numbers were large enough, and apparently too large for even the Navy to huddle them all into one cell. "Anyone got dice?" he asked, hoping they could start a game of some sort, despite the darkness. His shoulders slumped, and his brow furrowed. He needed something to do, he was getting itchy feet. "If anyone 'ere c'n beat me in an armwrestle, I'll give ye 2 dubloons when we git out o'here. Hell, I'll give anyone o' ye tha' much an' more if ye c'n entertain us fer more'n a few minutes"((OOC: Even if you don't have a character in jail, feel free to be a random pirate. ((OOC: Some fun for Doc Brackwell and the midwife and eventually Liz, Norry, Will and Swann)) [12 Jun 2007|12:15am]
Elizabeth moaned, her eyes fluttering behind her eyelids as she thrashed around in the throws of a fever. Infection had set in and she needed to be treated quickly before it got any worse. To that end, a doctor had been called in, a doctor Brackwell. Although he was not their regular physician, he had been the one that he returned with the servant sent out to fetch Dr Adams, with a note that Dr Adams was not available and would not be for some time. There would be enough time to check this fellows credentials later, when Elizabeth's life did not hang in the balance, and so he was admitted to her room, where the midwife was doing all she could to lower the girls temperature. "Evenin' sir" she said in greeting, standing a little out of respect, before sitting again beside Elizabeth's bed, dabbing her head and neck with a cold cloth. "She's burnin' up, think it might be childbed fever, if ye don't mind me saying. Had her little one about two hours ago, healthy boy, doesn't seem t'be a thing wrong with him, but she took a turn for the worse about an hour after 'e was born, and 'ers been sweating and unconcious ever since."She paused slightly, then added, "Course, you're the expert, sir," more out of respect for the man than out of a belief that he actually knew better than her the ailments of a woman after childbirth.

((OOC: A little interaction for Thomas and Leeny)) [11 Jun 2007|05:05pm]
Thomas made his way to the docks, his hat pulled down firmly on his head to shield his eyes from the bright Caribbean sun. He had his brown coat slung over his arm, and his two pistols shoved in his belt alongside his old sword. Everything he owned was on him, which didn't amount to much, and all the money he had in the world was slung in a purse at his side, hanging from his leather belt. His face was browned from the sun, and weatherbeaten, the lines around his eyes and mouth giving away his age and a lifetime spent at sea.He was careful to keep as inconspicuous as possible, a talent he had perfected over many years of not wanting to be noticed. There was some sort of to do in the town, and the last thing he wanted was to be caught up in something that would bring him face to face with any sort of authority.Saying that, he still needed to find a ship that was in need of a crew. He had already spent too much time on land, as far as he was concerned, the ocean was the place he felt comfortable and he wasn't likely to sleep easy until he was back there, be it on a pirate ship, fishing ship or merchant vessel. He felt no particular call to either of the three, but each offered a life at sea and so he would go with the first offer he received. He turned to look at the many ships docked in the port, but before he got anywhere near inquiring as to employment on any, he was jolted from behind. He drew his pistol instantly, lifting his head so as to better see his assailant from underneath his hat. A young boy...no, a girl. He kept his pistol drawn, however, and barked at her."Watch where yer goin' lass, else you'll git yersel' int' trouble" he said, his scottish, irish brogue rough and coarse as he glared at her.
