Hasbro Era (original) (raw)

"Hasbro Era" is a title based upon conjecture.

The Hasbro Era is the unofficial term that refers to the seasons of Power Rangers that were produced after Hasbro acquired the franchise from Saban in May 2018. The Hasbro Era started in 2019 with Power Rangers Beast Morphers, broadcast on Nickelodeon - barring potential broadcast deal changes with either company until the partnership contract with Nickelodeon expires in 2021 (which may see Nickelodeon as a placeholder network for the second season of Power Rangers Dino Fury due to Hasbro's shares in other networks and platforms).

As part of Hasbro's partnership with Nickelodeon, individual seasons generally consist of a total of 22 episodes, a regular 20 episode run split into two 10 episode halves along with a Halloween and Christmas special each year.

History[]

Saban Brands announced on February 15, 2018 that they would end their global Power Rangers master toy license agreement with Bandai America, effective April 2019. The following day, it was announced that they would instead partner with Hasbro to make Power Rangers toys, with their first series, Power Rangers Beast Morphers, subsequently being revealed on February 17.

On May 1, 2018, Hasbro announced their plans to acquire the brand in full for $522 million in cash and stocks, with Haim Saban remaining in an advisory role going forward. In 2020, a young-adult oriented reboot in the style of the 2017 film was announced to be in development with Jonathan Entwistle and Jenny Klein attached to develop for Netflix.

Reboot Cancelation[]

However on June 11, 2024, it was announced that the reboot series would not be moving forward, with Hasbro attempting to find a new developer.[1] Sources later confirmed that the series had actually been in development hell since 2021, with Netflix having canceled their contract after the premiere of Power Rangers Cosmic Fury.[2][3]

Hasbro, having cited concerns of low profit output of the Power Rangers IP, ultimately pitched a new idea to Netflix without the involvement of either Entwistle or Klein. This was rejected by Netflix, who later exited from the contract after having reluctantly published Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always and Power Rangers Cosmic Fury in a state undesirable to them,[4] with the latter having been offered 20 episodes yet Hasbro decided to develop only 10 instead.[5]

Reactions[]

After it was announced that the reboot would no longer be moving forward, it gartered immense negative fan reaction. It had been suggested that the death of Hasbro's late CEO Brian Goldner was a great contributing factor to the stalled development of the reboot, who had previously been noted to be a fan of the franchise. Sources surfaced revealing that Goldner had bought the franchise for Hasbro without consulting R&D.[6]

In light of these news, Amy Jo Johnson expressed her interest in acquiring and suggested a project in a similar vein to her recent comic series Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return.[7] Other actors who expressed their interest in doing so include Kevin Duhaney.[8]
