Keeping in mind that each translation is at the same time an interpretation, the translator(s) of the Septuagint provide a new (theological) interpretation or adaptation of the Hebrew Scriptures to the readers. Moreover, the translation may reflect the community’s understanding of certain issues, in this case the Sabbath. This paper aims at scrutinizing the possible theological and/or ideological understanding of the Sabbath commandment reflected by the process of translation, on the one hand. On the other hand, it explores whether the translator(s) noticed the literary and redactional relationship between these Sabbath commandments, undeniably present in the Hebrew texts. This investigations is carried out with the help of the “content related criteria” developed by Ausloos and Lemmelijn as well as the “theological(ly motivated) exegesis” proposed by Emmanuel Tov. Keywords: Septuagint, Sabbath commandment (Ex 20,8-11; 23,12; 34,21; 31,12-17; 35,2; Lev 23,3; Dt 5,12-15), translation techniques"

The source of these challenges can be ascribed to many different things. First, there are historical and cultural gaps between the ancient texts and the modern audience. Second, there is a cultural gap between the schools, teachers and the new generation of students who belong to the first generation to be born in the 21st century. Third, it seems difficult to reach students growing up in a world shaped by the virtual reality and by the so-called “influencers”. Both the described situation and the mentioned cultural gap are getting even worse since the beginning of corona-crisis: the whole world is found in lockdown, many are obliged to use social media and virtual reality for a long period. Against this background, the present paper suggests a teaching attitude or approach which could enable the teachers to be more effective in teaching and more importantly, to bring the world of bi...

The analysis focuses on the literary and redaction techniques used to interpret, integrate and re-contextualize the Sabbath locutions into the new textual environment. I argue that the application of the Sabbath commandment was part of Ezekiel"s strategy to tackle the exile and to shape the identity of the exiles.

Abstract: The Basis of Hope in the Babylonian Exile
According to the scholarly consensus, the emergence of Sabbath as the seventh day of the week needs to be situated against the ideological background of exilic and post-exilic periods and it functioned as identity marker in these periods. Despite this consensus, we are prompted to ask further: How was the Sabbath used to express the community’s self-definition and self-understanding?
I argue that the Sabbath as identity marker for the exiled covenantal community provided hope and continuity for the exiled Judeans in the book of Ezekiel. I discuss how the references on the Sabbath in Ezekiel form part of his ideological and theological tendency to interpret the notion of exile. The Babylonian exile represents a break, a trauma in the ancient Israelite history and as such, it pushed the community to implement this trauma into their group-identity. This leads to the reinterpretation of the communal history and the redefinition of the collective identity in their new socio-political settings. Ezekiel as priest and prophet in searching for means to provide hope for his people appeals to the communal history and reinterprets it on the basis of parallel dynamics. In the evoked history (Ezekiel 20), the covenant itself is not explicitly mentioned but the Sabbath is accentuated as the sign of relationship between God and Israel. Moreover, the profanation of the Sabbath, together with the idolatry and rejection of the statutes and ordinances, brought about the exiled situation. Therefore, I suggest that by the communal history with the Sabbath institution in its centre, Ezekiel considers the exiled community as a direct continuation of the covenantal community at Sinai. Therefore, the Sabbath functions as the ethnic identity marker for the exiled covenantal community and as the means of hope in the book of Ezekiel.
