She warns Billy if he continues alliance she will cast him adrift. Muriel loses her position and finds work with Boyd, keeping her past a secret. Boyd learns to love her and proposes marriage, but Muriel refuses. She requests a month's vacation, ostensibly to visit her mother, but goes to the hospital, where her child is born dead. She returns to Boyd's employment, and he insists upon at least an engagement. She is heart-broken when a letter permits the diverging path to converge towards happiness.
