Phelim discovers the hiding-place of his father's gold and one night attempts to steal some, but is discovered by his father, who disowns him. Phelim becomes the leader of a band of smugglers and hires Redfield, a highwayman, to "silence" Richard, the young son of Lawrence, and Patricia, who, now since the death of Sir Patrick and in the event of the death of Lawrence, would be the only thing to stand in his way to being the lord of Ballyskillen. Redfield hides Richard in a cave from which, unknown to Redfield, he is rescued by Driscoll a tavern keeper, who decides to adopt the child and later hold him for ransom. Redfield is betrayed by Phelim and sent to prison. One day from an old newspaper, he learns that sir Lawrence has died and that Phelim has now come into the possession of the title. He escapes from prison and is saved by Richard from capture. Phelim comes to the tavern at a word from Redfield. But Phelim injures Redfield and sets fire to the barn from which he is rescued by Richard. Later Phelim is captured when Redfield, dying, confesses to the conspiracy. Richard is astounded to learn of his parentage. Phelim dies from his wounds, and Lady Patricia and Richard come into their own. Written by Moving Picture World synopsis See less
