He carries with him on his last voyage his daughter, Jo, who is beloved by Jim Lucas, the mate, and they contemplate a wedding upon the completion of the home voyage. Horace Burke, son of a wealthy lumberman, becomes a passenger on the vessel and is at once attracted by the beauty of the Captain's daughter. Life on board ship furnishes opportunities for love making, so that Burke persuades Jo to renounce her promise to wed Jim and agree to become his wife. Poor Jim is disconsolate and realizes that his hopes of happiness are about to be wrecked. Captain Duggen has an attack of heart failure and dies suddenly. At the same time a cry of fire is raised by the sailors. Jim's first thought after discovering that the vessel is lost, is for the safety of his sweetheart, Jo, but she looks to Burke for protection, only to discover to her great horror that he is an abject coward and selfishly tries to save himself without a thought for her danger. She is forced into a boat, but refuses to leave her father's body. She swims back to the ship, followed by Jim, who gives a hasty burial to the dead and then saves his sweetheart. Nothing can part them thereafter. Written by Moving Picture World synopsis See less
