Thus, when it was announced that any couple who would consent to be married at a special marriage matinee at the opera house would be paid one hundred dollars, old man Bumpkin grasped at the opportunity to slip Bess off on one of her admirers. Bess agreed to the plan and Phil and Willie were advised that Bess would marry the one who got to the opera house first on the afternoon of the matinee. Each of the suitors secured a light surrey and the race commenced. Phil was the first to drive away with the girl. Then Willie managed to get her into his buggy. Then Willie's buggy lost a wheel. Willie, however, arrived first with Bess at the church. But to the consternation of the pair, and the disgust of father Bumpkin, the award had already been made to another couple.
