He is taken to the State Asylum. His sister Jane and their mother move to a house in the immediate vicinity. Jane is courted by Welsh, a rough mountaineer who grows jealous when she refuses him. Professor Thorne, searching in the neighborhood for butterflies, rescues Jane from being attacked by Welsh. He swears vengeance. Later, Jane prevents Welsh from stabbing Thorne, and their friendship grows. Jane's brother escapes from the asylum, secures an ax and goes in search of Oliver Cromwell. He is met by the mountaineer, who, knowing his weakness, bits upon a diabolical scheme to get even. He tells the father that Thorne is the man he is after. The professor is captured and bound to a tree, the old man telling him the while that he is to be executed. Welsh, fearful at the extent of his crime, tries to dissuade him. Jane, scouring the woods from the top of a tree, sees the terrible position her lover is in. She shoots the ax out of her father's hand. Guards arrive in time to prevent further trouble. Jane tells Thorne that her father is insane and Welsh escapes through the woods. Later, the professor takes Jane to his arms, caring little for her father's trouble.
