A traveling salesman fascinates the girl for a moment, taking her to the opera and to a fashionable café. Afterwards he tricks her into entering his room, where he demands a kiss. She tries to telephone for help; he takes the receiver from her, and they struggle in front of the instrument. The silent call is recorded in the hotel office below by a light which comes and goes on the switchboard. This attracts the clerk, who answers the call, and hears his sweetheart's voice raised in altercation with her admirer. He dashes upstairs, but for fear of raising a disturbance which might affect the girl's reputation, gains the room by means of a fire-escape and a window coping. He knocks down the lothario, rescues the girl, and when they are again at their respective posts an engagement ring brings about a happy understanding.
